Windows Search Service doesn't start

I'm trying to investigate a problem that started several weeks ago-Outlook 2007 search window never brings up any choices; no mail items ever populate the central box

Under Tools/Options/Search Options the boxes are checked for each of the accounts and PST files and to show results as I type. The radio button for All Folders is on. These are the default settings which used to work.

When I type into the search box a pop-up states that there are files that are not yet indexed

Under Windows 7 - Indexing Options, it states indexing is not running

When I check services, Windows Search Service is stopped

Under Windows services Windows Search Service is stopped. It is set to start up on boot however-delayed.

When I try to start this manually an error returned is;

Windows could not start the Windows search service on local computer the service did not return an error this could be an internal Windows error or an internal service error if the problem persists contact your system administrator at

C:\Windows\system32\SearchIndexer.exe /Embedding does exist which is what The Windows Services says is the executable.

Meanwhile searching in the search box in Windows Explorer does work but I also get a flag that the files are not indexed

Any help appreciated

Kevin

Best resolutionI really never got this resolved. I believe it might have been that at that time I had removed what I thought were a number of unnecessary services usingMSconfig. Even though Windows was not able to tell me I must to remove something on which the indexing service was dependent. I resolve by rolling back the machine to a prior date using a full system backup I had created just FYI.
