"Windows Security Service" needs to scan

While researching bicycle frame jigs (my hobby) I saw a photo on Google images I wanted to see full size, when I clicked the image I got a windows looking dialog box indicating "Windows Security Service needs to scan" for some unknown reason I associated this with the file being a photo and I selected ok, I caught myself and closed the resulting window (not the Norton window I expected) before "scanning completed" (I normally know better than this)

I did a full scan in safe mode with my AV (Norton Internet security 2011) and MBAM fully updated and all seems fine with no infections at all. I also fully cleaned all Temp and temp internet files

I am wondering if Windows Security Service is capable of requesting such a scan?

I searched this afternoon and could not uncover anything on this, and I am very curious if anyone has run into this

This is 'fakeware', rogue security. See if you can run Norton and MBam in regular mode, not safe mode.

Thank you for the reply, both MBAM and NIS were also run in normal windows mode with good results.

I also should have mentioned the browser in use was IE8

It seems I caught my grave mistake in time, I normaly would close the browser and start over.

Whenever you see any such fake pop-ups, disconnect from the net and close (kill the browser process) the browser window via task manager.
Clean out the temp, browser cache etc. Do a quick scan just to be on the safe side. You can then reconnect again..

Did you have UAC on? And down in the status bar of IE, does it say protected mode on? If so those saved you from a horrible infection. Protection Mode puts IE into a sandbox which protects your computer from such nasty malware as this.

Some users are too quick to turn off UAC and the like...because they believe they "know" what they are doing.

Yes UAC is on, also protected mode was on, I thought that "should" do it, I really am thankful for your comments

The whole thing was bugging me silly yesterday so I re-imaged the drive just to be supper sure, likly overkill but now I know and feel better for a little time investment

It's so not like me to do something like that, but I guess that is why they call them mistakes. I also thank EzioAuditore for posting proper procedure.
