Hi guys,

first post in this forum: so this is just a copy of what I just posted on Win7 q&a, not expecting much from there so, here we go:
just had this very same issue today. And yes, I downloaded Win7 from MS and got my key from MS. So today for some graphic corruption I had on the screen, instead of restarting the OS as usual, I launched task manager to try restarting dwm.exe...didn't work very well, I was always sent back to a non-aero display. So I rebooted, and just before login in, I got the message that "this windows version might be counterfeited and I should get a genuine (that sounds so mad lol, on a properly activated beta) I checked the box "asked me later", logged in, everything was normal, windows is still activated, and yes the beta watermark is there and as normal as it always was. As to hardware changes, lol, I'm running a laptop, and no, I didn't install win7 with the same key on any other machine and I didn't give my key to anyone.

I just want to know how this could happen. I've restarted a few times in between now and it didn't happen again...any idea?

thanks for your help anyone ;)

Hello Logos,

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Sorry, I don't know what could have caused that. If it only happened once, then it just may have been a glitch during that one boot. Keep in mind that this is a Beta and there are going to be some quirks.

If it becomes a problem, let us know. We're here to help.

Enjoy your stay,
Gary

thanks for the reply, yep, I'll definitely post back if it happens again. My guess is that dwm. exe is the culprit; like I said I tried to end it and restart it. And this same exec is used to switch back to non-aero display on really counterfeited (and/or not activated after the grace period) versions of Windows. So there must have been some confusion in the system that trying to end the process and restart it might not have been user initiated but the result of a non-genuine copy of Windows. Lol this is funny after all, on a beta anyone can get a key for from MS itself...

AFAIK there are only 4 keys for every (32&64 bit) version of se7en, so don't worry about giving/using elsewhere/losing the key.

Hey Logos. Almost the exact same thing happened to me. I was trying to set the CRT on a dual screen with my 29' standard tv (via component conectors) and had some vga problems, so i reversed the changes al booted upagain. Exactly like you said, while booting i got the "you might be a victim of piracy... bla bla bla" also checked the "ask me later" box, an never had any more problems... I've botted up several times since, but it was a one time thing.... hopefully just a glitch...

OK thanks for the info; yes that's a bug. BTW I often heard it's happened to people running genuine versions of Vista and XP; MS acknowledged the bugs and corrected that with updates, which they probably won't on Win7 beta or RC, not worth it.
