Windows Shell Common DLL Has Stopped Working

I have just started to receive the following message when I try and access 'Start/Control Panel/Mouse':
"Windows Shell Common Has Stopped Working"
Any ideas how to fix this problem?

I discovered that the application causing the problem was:

Synaptic.dll

.... the solution was to reinstall Synaptics Touch Pad Driver.
Problem solved.
