When I start up windows it loads up normally but after about two minutes whatever I am doing freezes and not long after that the task bar freezes too but i can still move my mouse.
The computer has been like this for two days. It has been normal before this happened. I just turned on my computer in the morning and it screwed up. I did not install any big updates beforehand.

I have tried
-System Restore
-Scanning with Microsoft Security Essentials
-Scanning with Malwarebytes
-Searching through the event logs for a specific problem
-Restarting numerous times

msconfig seems to be the place that will make it work. If I disable all the services and open up steam and chrome it doesn't freeze (but there is no sound, wifi, or brightness)

I have tried enabling the sound and wifi etc services but I think there are some services that need to be running.
I've tried playing around with the general tab and the boot tab in msconfig too but nothing happened.

Please help as I use this laptop for making music and playing games (Currently in the middle of hl2 for the third time and earthbound zero / mother 1 on the nes)

What you describe can be caused by overheating. Are you sure there is sufficient air flow and no execessive dust build up?

When I put my hand over the fan / air vent it is warm. I don't think it has something to do with overheating because its fine if I disable all the services in msconfig, but I need to know what service is causing the freezing

The troubleshooting steps for diagnosing services is to disable "all" and then add back one at a time until the culprit is found.

Just a humdrum little system.
I got it working by disabling all the services, then adding them back in groups of 6 then restarting. I still don't know what was causing it and there are still a bunch of services disabled but it does what I want it to.

As mentioned earlier, enable them one by one or in group and check which one of these is the culprit , it may take sometime, but you will get to know the fault behind.
