Windows Unexpected Shutdown

I just woke up my HTPC & was greeted by a message on the Windows 7 desktop. I also had this message 2 weeks ago. It said:

Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown.
Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.
View problem details - Check for solution

I was using this HTPC yesterday & everything was OK. At that time Windows had a Defender update which I did. I also did a Malwarebytes scan & everything was OK. And then did a cold re-boot.

When I had the same message almost exactly 2 weeks ago, IIRC I also did a Windows Defender update & Malwarebytes scan & a cold reboot.

I just noticed this. I had a program scheduled last night to record for 72 minutes but ended up with the recording split into 2 parts. The first one was 30 minutes long. I FF to the end & got this message:
Video Error
Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer.

The second "half" was 38 minutes but started about 10 minutes into the program.

Two weeks ago when I had the problem I also had a split recording the same day as the error message. That time a 35 minute recording was split. The first part was 27 mins & the second part was 6 mins, and of course a couple mins were missing.

I'm presuming those split recording are related to the error message. But are they the cause or the effect?

I looked in WMC7 at both of these corrupt recordings. Each portion was recorded with tuner #1 and had the same message.

The first part said: While recording (name): the computer lost power or experienced a temporary failure.

The second part said: Recording of (name): began late on 7/27/13 7:32:17 PM due to a temporary failure caused by either a system malfunction or a power loss and stopped on 7/27/13 8:10:00 PM.

The split recording from 7-15-2013 had the same message but with different dates & times.

The HTPC is plugged into a UPS so that should be OK. Of course the PSU could be acting up. Or the mobo. Or something else. How can I determine if it was a power failure or a system malfunction?

I also had a problem about weeks ago & I wrote down this information. I got busy & forgot about it & that I even took notes.

ehshell.exe - Application Error
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process ID=0xf28 (3880), Thread ID=0xf68 (3994)
Click OK to terminate the application
Click Cancel to debug the application

I Googled but came up empty. Most results had to do with not being able to run the software. Mine runs, but unexpectedly shuts down at random times.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I started getting this same error before Xmas. Again, Googling finds nothing.

I forgot about this thread, probably because there was no activity in it.

Anyway, I did find my problem by running a RAM test. Even though the RAM sticks were brand new, if both were used in either slot the RAM tests failed. If only one stick was used the test passed.

MY desktop PC just happened to use the same exact type & speed of RAM but different make. I swapped RAM & the HTPC works just fine now. And so does the desktop. They both pass the RAM test with either stick in either slot. Apparently the HTPC had a compatibility issue with the original RAM.

Actually I ran two different RAM tests, MemTest86 and MemTest86+. They both gave the same results. Download them & give them a try.
