This probably doesn't apply to many users but I run Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and Office 2000.
I applied all the updates released today and Office was rendered inoperative (Not Responding). After reverting to the restore point I installed the updates one by one and found that the offending update was Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (x64) (KB890830).

Saphire fan is noisy. Case fans are almost silent. Love the case.
Office 2000 has never been supported on WIndows 7 - for the simple reason that it was too old even in 2009 when Win7 was released, and it went totally out of support in 2010.
The MSRT is a Virus Removal Tool - it has probably been updated to deal with the recent massive surge in vba/macro malware, and caught your Office software tin the process.
Office 2000 is inherently insecure, and I really do recommend that you replace it.
