I have a 3 year old Dell E1705 laptop that is currently running Vista. I already ran the Upgrade Advisor and I can update to Win 7 Home Premium 32-Bit.

After I install Windows 7 should I immediately connect to Windows Update and download all my hardware device drivers? Or should I try to install my hardware via Vista compatibility mode first?

I've heard it both ways and that Windows Update will come with most of the drivers I need.

What do you guys think or what have you done?

Hi, buddy.
I usually have all the lastest drivers by hand. So, I suggest you to download all compatible with your laptop before upgrading to Windows 7.
Hope this helps you decide!

ps. Do not do an upgrade from Vista. Make a clean installation of Windows 7.

So is the general rule of thumb let Windows Update search for any necessary drivers for Win 7 first, and then if any are not found use Dell Drivers and Utilities CD to install Vista-compatible drivers?

If I have to install Vista drivers should I install them "Run as Administrator" run under "Compatibility Mode for Vista" or just run normal under Win 7 ?

No check the hardware manufacturer first, and if they don't have anything then try Windows Update.

then if any are not found use Dell Drivers and Utilities CD to install Vista-compatible drivers?

Again check the manufacturer's site first, as if the device is still supported (or support only recently dropped) depending on how old it is they will likely have drivers available that are newer than what is on the disk.

Either or. If it won't install normally, then use compatibility mode. Most Vista drivers will install and work just fine in Windows 7.
