So I wanted to do a Windows Update but when going to Windows Update I'm greeted with this:

Then I clicked on the blank button and after waiting I got this:

Does anyone know what to do?
Thanks in advance.

In action center under control panel, run the windows update troubleshooter. Let us know the results.

PS: Is it only this window that is messed up? Do other graphical things load and look ok?

This sounds to me like permissions problems... which can be a pain to identify properly.
Let's see if we can check the main areas and see something there...

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

REG QUERY HKU
REG QUERY HKU\S-1-5-20
REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20"
REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList"
ICACLS C:\Windows
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32
ICACLS C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Post the results

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Ah - I just noticed the Drive letter :( (comes from posting hurriedly while at work!)

Windows Vista and above are really designed to run only from the C: drive - and there's no really good reason not to let them do so.
You appear to be running from the D: drive for some reason? Can I ask why?

The problem arises because although most programs will use the proper environment variables, and so not complain, there are also a number which are hard-coded to use the C: drive - and getting that type of program to run can be a major pain.

99+% of MS programs will behave properly - but others may not, and can break other things.

Have you used any form of registry cleaner? (if so, which one?)

What AV are you currently using (what others have ever been installed?)

Because I got an SSD (The D: drive) which I wanted my OS to run on
I have used CCleaner once or twice as registry cleaner.
I am currently using AVG Free but my previous AV was Bitdefender.

Something that may give us a clue is the MGADiag tool - while it's primarily for identifying problems with WGA, it uses much of the same components as WU, so some of the diagnostics can show up common problems

we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
