Solved Windows Update - Could not search for new updates 0x800B0100

That shouldn't cause problems?

The Base language is US English, I assume (from the report - I wish it'd tell us things like that!)

Correct, us-eng as base. I was in fact planning on removing the additional languages as I previously said I had installed them to play some MMO's and without them, the text displayed was incoherent.

My goodness, I hope I haven't scared you both off with my current situation? :cry:

I had an idea that may work to resolve these issues. It seems to be related to the update programs and the languages I have installed, I have a laptop with Ultimate x64 as well, could I install the other languages on it, then copy all the necessary windows update files from the laptop to the pc, or will that cause more problems?

Cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Don't worry, we don't get scared off :) I had lectures 9-6 today, so I was a little busy! But I've got some time spare so I've come online - it wasn't what I was hoping to see though!

I barely know anything about MUI languages, so I'll leave you to Noel for the time being. I'll still be watching this thread though, but I'll be on a back seat. If you don't have any luck playing with these languages, I'd be more than happy to step back in :)

Tom

lol :p Not intentionally. My suggestion would've been to do a system restore, so anything is better than that! I have a strange feeling that the SURT didn't like my files... I downloaded them straight from MS though, so I don't see why it wouldn't. This update is a really odd one because it doesn't have it's own installer. I'm not quite sure how it works, but it was rolled out quickly to patch the exploits that the Flame malware used. Lots of people have made custom installers for it (by taking a newer WUA update and injecting the files and changing a few strings), but I don't have even the slightest bit of trust in them.

I'll have a think as well then :)

First thing I tried was a system restore with no luck, it errored out without making changes. I have also done a chkdsk and a malware scan with no errors found. I also tried to uninstall the additional language without success.

I can't understand why MS has not created a standalone installer for the windows update update. How hard can it be, it would seem that doing so would correct a lot of the failures of which there seem to be many?

Would it be possible to copy all the individual windows update parts from a working pc to this one? Since it says it isn't a valid win32 application? Seems to be it is only 9 files of .dll and .exe type, or is that too simplistic an idea?

I suspect that the problem lies with registering the dll's - but I honestly have no idea where to start - you could try this, and see if it helps (it shouldn't hurt, at least!)

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and copy/paste the contents of the code box below into it.

Code:
 [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]net stop wuauserv [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 wuapi.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 wups.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 wucltui.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 wuweb.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 msxml.dll /s [/FONT]

[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 msxml3.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 urlmon.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 softpub.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 initpki.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 mssip32.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 wintrust.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 dssenh.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 rsaenh.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 sccbase.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 slbcsp.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll /s [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]regsvr32 jscript.dll /s[/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]net start wuauserv [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana]
reboot, and see if anything has improved.

I was able to have a bit of success with copying the Windows Update components to the windows\system32 directory from my laptop. Granted I had to go into my Ubuntu install in order to copy the files, but anyway, the Windows Update service now starts successfully. I was able to run an update as well, but there are only placeholders for the text in the windows update window. I think this is because of the language files, the .mui's? being marked as corrupted. Now I think to finish the fix requires me to copy these files as well, but I am not sure which ones are the ones being actively used, are they loaded from the winsxs folder, or do they exist elsewhere?

I have found a couple of packaged installers for this 7600.256 version of windows update, do these contain the necessary mui files, or do they only consist of the exe and dll files? I also found switches that force a reinstall /wuforce and also and uninstall /uninstall that would revert it to the previous installed version. Would either of those correct this situation by replacing/updating the corrupted files?

OK guys, just to let you know I was able to resolve the problem, this time by replacing the .mui files in system32\en-us folder, now update works fine and the windows are fully populated.

As to the corrupt files, I guess they will have to remain until Microsoft creates a new update package whihc hopefully will flush all the bad ones out.

Thanks for all your help.
