The Windows Update murder/suicide attempt

It's still alive, just a bit messed up.

This was the first update I've performed on it, which asked me to install 2 "important" updates, and then some optional ones I selected which were updated drivers and some others I forgot the names of.

10 out of 11 updates installed successfully, and it didn't let me know which one failed - it lead me to believe the computer needed to be restarted until it could complete.

Checking out the "View update history" comes up totally blank.

In my list of installed updates, it has:

KB970858
KB970789
KB970424
KB970423
KB967355
KB971180

Now, for my list of things that went completely WRONG:

1. The Windows update service is totally dead.

2. Resident Shield in AVG 8.5 is permanently disabled.

3. System Restore will not function because "Windows has detected file system corruption on C:" and even after running chkdsk upon reboot two times, the error persists.

4. Firefox will not run because it says it's already running.

I'll attempt to uninstall as many of these updates as I can and post back here with the results.

I kept telling myself to stay far away from windows updates... they've ALWAYS screwed me in the end on every OS. Forgive me for thinking it'd be any different with Windows 7.

I had to disable Resident Shield in AVG 8.5 as it was causing my CPU to be at 100%.
Since then all Windows Updates have caused no problems in Win7 RC 7100.

Hey McBlzr, I encountered that problem of AVG hogging cpu power when I tried running the command "sfc /scannow" to try and fix another problem I've had.

Well, anyways, here's what I did for my last attempt for this crazy update problem:

After the uninstallation failed for all of the above listed KB updates, I rebooted into the Repair console and performed the system restore to the point created before updates were installed.

It rebooted straight into the startup repair program, "fixed" some things, and then rebooted again into Windows.

NOW, things were worse than before: the keyboard was dead, windows activation was non-existant, AVG was completely gone, but Firefox would run although it was totally reset back to first-run defaults.

I again rebooted into the Repair console and tried to restore the computer to an even earlier point, which was made at startup today. Curiously, ALL other restore points were gone before today. And it failed to restore to the one I picked.

Final conclusion: Windows Update committed murder/suicide.

I'll have to wipe that partition and install it all over again... But I think I've had all I want for now, I'll wait until ALL the bugs are fixed before I try 7 again.
