I got home, found updates waiting to be installed on my windows 7 64-bit OS that has been running fine for well over 5 months. All of the updates updated except for KB2687481 for my Excel 2003, and KB2760492 for Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter. after trying to restart a few times, (watching it update on the boot, too), i ran chkdsk /f, no help. i ran ccleaner, no help. i ran wise registry cleaner, no help. i figured McAfee was configured to scan the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder, i uninstalled it and went back to MSE. no help. still Error code 80070643, went to help item 10. Windows Update Error 80070643,first fix: "The .NET framework is a part of Windows that's used to build, deploy, and run programs. Since multiple programs use the .NET Framework, problems can occur from hard disk corruption or faulty program installations, which can cause an update to fail."
everything's been working perfectly for 5 months, brand new sata 1TB hard drive, net framework has been running fine,
so on to second fix: "The steps to resolve the problem are intended for advanced users. If you're not comfortable performing these steps, ask a friend or support professional to help you. You'll find the steps in the .NET Framework article on the Microsoft website" (oh boy)..tried Fix it 50123, says it fixed things, but nope, still 80070643...so i did method 2: repair the .NET Framework 4, so i did, it completed, still no dice, rats. I tried to update each one seperately, same result. found the other forum post, http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...pdate-failure-loop-error-code-80070643-a.html looks like this is an old issue that never got fixed. well, i just went to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35715 and got the excel downloaded manually, then got the outlook update manually here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35691 when i try to run both updates, it replies 'the update cannot be applied.' (nice to see that an update from windows could be so much trouble as to cause someone to do a clean install as an easier option) windows update works fine, i just installed the latest definitions to MSE with it after all of this, and another restart didn't help, and 'restore' is a hiding manoevre, is there a fix for these two kb updates?
