Windows Update Error 80073701

So I've had this error for a while and I've tried close to everything.

1. I can't recover from my manufacturer's recovery disk because I've lost it (whoops)
2. I can't perform an in place upgrade because it's OEM and I can't get an ISO from Microsoft

So I hope someone can help me with this issue. Here's the details:

- The code is 80073701 (ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING)
- System Update Readiness Tool says there's no errors.
- Running sfc /scannow is more helpful, but I'm not sure what updates to remove or what files to replace.
- These might be the problem areas:

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

I think I'll be able to fix this at the same time - I'm just surprised that CheckSUR didn't pick it up.

I think you may have other deeper problems... From the logs, it looks like you may have more than one MUI Language Pack installed - which breaks the Licensing terms for Home Premium, and can only be achieved by use of a hack (which carries its own dangers, including the system perhaps being declared non-genuine.

I need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.x

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Wow, thanks for spotting that! I just recently got a random "Not Genuine" text thing at the bottom right of my desktop (which did fix itself with a reboot). The sticker says "Windows 7 Home Prem OA". Once again, thanks a lot for your help.

Nope - that doesn't show the characteristics of a multi-language hack having been used - so I'll post the fixes I was going to as soo as I get time to create them!

Here's the fix for the file error, at least - I'm having problems understanding the exact cause of the component missing one, so we'll have to deal with that separately.

I've uploaded a file - hr2aa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\hr2aa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\hr2aa
or
DIR E:\hr2aa



The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...



XCOPY <drive>:\hr2aa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h



(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )



run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply
