I know this is a PC forum, but I am at a loss other than calling Microsoft for this update problem that has been ongoing for almost a year now, so I'm hoping you can help. This 2008 R2 SP1 server fails to install any updates anymore. It used to be hit or miss, some would install and others wouldn't, but then it started failing on pretty much all updates, including just trying to update the Windows update components. The error code is 80073712. I want to send you the WindowsUpdate.log file along with the results of the checksur utility when I last ran it in May, but I'm currently getting an error when trying to upload the attachment to this ticket - 500 - Internal server error. Please let me know if there is another way to get the logs to you.

Just so you know, I haven't ran the checksur since May, but there isn't a newer version available, and it came back with the same results as the previous tool always did. Just 2 things that it finds, but never fixes. I thought maybe I could find them in the registry of another machine and copy them over, but that didn't work, the values were the same in the registry of both machines. I have also ran the sfc scan in the past and it doesn't find any problems. Below is the text of the checksur log in case I can't get the attachments to you today:

I just noticed the file size limit for a zip is 8MB. My CBS.zip was 13MB. There were 5 cbspersist_.cab files all with dates in August. I will moved a couple out to get my filesize down. Let me know if you need the other cab files and I will upload them separately.

There's no evidence of any SFC scan?

The background CBS data shows a mass of this type of error...

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

I ran the sfc /scannow a long time ago, so the results may not be in the CBS.log file any more. I just finished running it again and have attached the updated cbs.log file in the cbs.zip here.

Oh ok. I kinda wondered because I didn't think that looked like the right CBS data you responded with, but I wasn't sure. Let me know if you need anything else from me for analysis.

These two keys are missing and to fix this we need to replace them:

HKLM\COMPONENTS\CanonicalData\Deployments\6cccd8f687e..b5568f5bd2a_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17939_53e9257f597e6d18

This should fix everything:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

When that's done, run the System Update Readiness Tool, SFC and then try to update. Zip up your CBS folder and upload it when that's all done. Oh, and let me know if it worked :)

Tom

I've uploaded a file - md3aa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive

Please download and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the file and select Extract All, andsave to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the followingcommands.

Code:
IF EXIST C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1 DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1
REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY "%userprofile%\desktop\md3aa\COMPONENTS" C:\Windows\System32\config

.

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE -do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run anotherCheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

I downloaded the zip, but haven't ran the commands yet

This is a server 2008 R2 box, so creating a system restore point is not an option, we only have our nightly full system backup to depend on for recovery. So before proceeding, I want to know if something goes haywire with this process, would the server still boot and be functional, or would I be left having to try and recover from a previous system state backup just to get the server to boot up?

There is very little chance of things going badly-enough wrong to prevent normal booting.
The worst that's likely to happen is that the COMPONENTS file is not properly copied - and the system rebuilds a default one. This is easily corrected, and doesn't usually cause any major problems.
