Here is the requested log info for my Windows Update Error Code 80070643:

1. CBS.zip: the logs after running the SURT tool. This routine ran in just a few minutes and asked to install HotFix KB94781. It said the installation was completed OK.

2. SFC.log.zip : the CBS.log file after running SFC /scannow. This said it found some corrupt files but could not fix them all. Note that a long time ago I deleted the standard/sample media files (photos & music) that get installed with Win7.

3. Capture.JPG: screenshot of the the error messages I get when trying to install the Office 2010 SP2 update. Note that I did reboot just before running this update.

I'm still considering de-installing Office 2010 and then re-installing from an updated SP2 download - if I can find that. My concern is what imapact doing this will have on the sieze of WINSXS & INstaller folders.

The CBS log that came with it is incomplete - but there are a number of errors present even so.

The SFC log you posted separately shows the following problems....

As you can see, a number of the files are the same - so I'll product a fix protocol for the SFC errors later, and we'll recheck them afterwards.

Thanks for your help - I do appreciate it.

I saw those same messages but they seem to all refer to the media files I deleted a long time ago. Should this cause the Office 2010 SP2 update to fail?

PS: I did just run the MalwareBytes AntiMalware check and it returned with no problems. As far A I can tell my system is A-OK - I have no operational problems at all.

You should never delete system files - which anything within the winsxs folder is.
There are one or two other files showing in the Check SUR report, which we'll get to once we have confirmation of the results of the SFC changes.

Yup - I hear you: I did not delete any "system" files or anything from WINSXS. I just deleted the sample media files from their subfolders in the Office directory (or wherever they were - it was a long time ago.)

I am aware of the sensitivity WINSXS has and also it's tendency to grow increasingly large over time. So even though my sense is there is a lot of stuff in WINXSX that could be deleted, I never touched it.

After checking the System log I found the pointer to the Office 2010 SP2 installer log - it is attached. It says it failed with Error 1603 but I can't find any mention of any specific failure.

I seem to have forgotten to post the fix!.....

I've uploaded a file - bbdaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\bbdaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\bbdaa
or
DIR E:\bbdaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\bbdaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Thanks - got the ZIP & extracted it OK. It looks like you are copying the standard Windows 7 media files back into WINSXS. Could it really be that simple a fix? I never deleted anything from WINSXS so if they are really missing how did that happen?

And why can't I just copy the folders back to WINSXS using regular Windows? It's been a long time since I used the command line xcopy so I looked up all those switches - they all just basically ensure the directories you supplied are copied OK.

I tried to do just that - a straight copy of the 4 folders into WINSXS - and they are all already there. So that answers my first question - they did not get deleted.

However - I checked the contents of the folders in my WINSXS to see if they matched the content of yours. ANd guess what? On my system the folders are empty!

So how did that happen?

Anyway, I ran Take Ownership on WINSXS so I could copy into it from regular windows and put your folders & their content back in there. The copy worked A-OK and the folders are now not empty.

I ran sfc /scannow and have attached the cbs.log file.

Since I just had to try it I attempted to install the SP2 update again. THis time it failed with "unknown error." The Get Help said this:

"WindowsUpdate_80070643" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

I'll do some checking on what that means in the morning.

Thanks again for your help with this. It does seem we are getting closer - but to what??

The problem with the way you did the job is that the permissions are almost certainly now wrong -
Please check that TrustedInstaller has Full access, and that System, Administrators, and Users have Read/Execute access.

They should be OK, then

Your latest CBS log is free of any significant errors.

Please run the CheckSUR tool again, and post the new CheckSUR.log file - it will tell us how much remains to be done.

CheckSUR gave some interesting results - attached are both of it's very small log files.

I also tried the following:

1. Downloaded the Office 2010 SP2 update file from MS and ran it directly, thus bypassing the Windows Update procedure. It said Installation Failed right after the "Determining which files to update."

2. Found a recent thread from the same problem that said to do a Repair function on Office 2010 from Control Panel/Programs & Features. When I tried this nothing at all happened - no message, no error, nothing.

So I'm thinking there is something wacked with my Office 2010 install. Not sure what to do about that - it all seems to work OK.

I've uploaded a file - bbdab.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\bbdab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\bbdab
or
DIR E:\bbdab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\bbdab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run CheckSUR gain and post the results - hopefully it will be clear of everything except the usual IE10 cockups.

Perhaps I have misunderstood your instructions, but I have no bbdab subdirectory for WINXSX. What I did was copy your directories into WINSXS, replacing the subdirectories of the same name that were already there.

Here are the results of the DIR command on your source directories:

You seem to have got it right - there shouldn't be a bbdab folder in winsxs :)

This could mean that the problem is in the registry, rather than the file system.

I'm too tired to do it tonight - but I'll try and get to it tomorrow, and see how best to approach it.

If you haven't heard from me by this time Tuesday, SHOUT!
