Suddenly yesterday Windows update starting returning an error each time I tried to install updates. The updates are being downloaded ok but when I select install I get the following:

Code 800B0100 Windows update encountered an unknown error

I have researched this but the information I found related to "compatability check" software which I guess relates to earlier Windows versions and compatability with Windows 7.

I have also tried the download/install with security switched off, this made no difference either.

Has anyone got an idea where I should go from here?

Thanks in advance.

Mervyn

Just a added thought. Can you download and install updates for other security programs such as ant-ivirus, anti-malware, anti-spyware. If you can there probably isn't a virus ect causing the problem because they would shut down these update also.

Success!

Thanks Bill2 for your suggestions I worked down the list without success until I got to the MS fixit option.

Although I was unable to run the Fixit utility, each time I tried to start it, the system stuttered to a halt and I had to reboot, so I moved down to the BITS and update .dll list and re-registered them (excluding a few that were not recognised). Once I rebooted the indows update list was cleared and when I checked for updates I was presented with the 2 that had failed before. Eureka! They updated ok.

:D
