I went sleeping at 23:55, left the pc on to update when i woke up today at 09:02 the update was still going... It was only 1 of 1 updates but still so weird?

If you dont have sp-1 and do have a slowish DL it may have been the SP. It is several hundred Mb.

* We need the KB number to know what specific update you refer to.

* Have you checked in Event Viewer ?
Start - Event Viewer - Windows Logs - System & Application.
Check for any red error messages to do with this problem.

*What is listed {regarding your problem} in Windows Update > View Update History?

Re your update settings -
* I suggest you change them to notify you but let you choose when to download them.

* BTW....Always make sure you have a current system restore point prior to downloading anything.
