When attempting to run a Windows Update, I get notifications that 3 updates fail.

I've run the SURT & SFC scan. SFC scan reported: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

The error/codes copied from the Windows Update window are:

Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

The error/codes copied from Event Viewer System log are:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070057: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2937610).

Thanks in advanced for the assistance! :)

It looks to me as if you had some severe problems back in May this year - which were apparently fixed.
The question is... How did you fix these problems? 'Fixing' them by using a 'registry cleaner' could well produce the type of problem you are currently seeing.

Do you still have any System Restore points from around this time? (Please do NOT attempt to use them, if so - it may create even more problems)

Please post your C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file.

Hi NoelDP,

Unfortunately, I don't recall what may have happened back in May. But I think I may know what could have been the cause.

We're currently running .Net Framework 4.5 & the failing update was for 3.5. Additionally, IE 11 was already installed, so that's probably why that one was failing too.

I simply went into WSUS, moved this workstation to it's own group & unapproved these updates. When I attempted to run Windows Update again, it said that all updates had been applied.

.NET 3.5 is part of Windows 7 and cannot be uninstalled - and still requires updates.

Please post the windowsupdate.log file I requested.

Sorry for the delay. If I don't have a chance to try that today, I should by tomorrow.

Thanks again for all of your help! :)

Phew! Finally getting back to this. Thanks for not leaving the country! ;)

I attempted to install the .Net 3.5.1 update you linked to but received error: Some updates were not installed

The windowsupdatelog.log is attached.

Thx again!

The relevant error is

This indicates bad data - but not where the bad data is :(
Since you attempted the install offline and got the same error message as online, we have to assume that the bad data is in the already-installed stuff (of which there is a mass it could be).
The quickest solution is likely to be a repair install, as we could hunt for a long time to find a single data-point error, only to find that there are actually more than one.

My problem at the moment is heavy commitments both at work and outside - so my posting time is limited, and responses could be slower than either of us would like :(

No problem at all regarding your delay. I can totally relate & greatly appreciate your feedback & time. :)

Thanks for that advice. I'll have to try to address that undertaking when time permits, as well.

Question though...when doing an OS repair, should I create a system restore point in case anything hiccups?

ALWAYS do backups to external media first - it's unlikely that a System Restore point will assist if anything goes seriously wrong with a repair install.
Mostly, the repair will work, but when it doesn't, it usually backs out gracefully... but occasionally it will crash irretrievably.
