I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1... Running Windows update for the first time, it installed the update agent, and downloaded a few updates no problem... Then later it ran again, and needed to update the update agent again... Now after that second agent update, searching for updates hangs... I let update run all day, and nothing.

I have tried manually installing the updates, and it also hangs at the very beginning of that process, where it says checking for update... I also ran Fix it, and tried other workarounds, didn`t help... I`m an IT guy, and have installed Windows many, many times, and have never had this problem... I personally think it`s the latest update agent causing it to hang... Maybe Microsoft needs to put out a hotfix.

I'm not sure why I see what I see:
Two computers on the same network and in need of the same patches can have drastically different scan times. 20 minutes for one and overnight for the other.

There are several threads discussing this very topic:
long scan times (overnight scans work for some)
high CPU usage (mostly during file validation)
high RAM usage as the entire process progresses

There has been an update issues this month...

...but it was pulled for some unknown reason.

The tin foil hat crowd is having fun speculating.

I`ll try that September update client and few other CMD commands... If update still hangs, I may just bump up to Windows 10.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Good morning,
same problem 'update hangs at searching' occured the first time a month ago. Neither a clean install (windows 7, home premium, x86) nor all the suggestions found at the microsoft website solved the problem. After trying a lot I had success with manually installing KB3060716. After this searching for update worked as it should work.... Until yesterday!!!! Same problem again. This time KB3087039 solved the problem. Don't know why and if it could be a solucion for others...

best regards
