Windows Update: Incredibly strange behaviour

Hello,

First post here, hope some kind soul can help! I have Windows Update set to 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them', and this has been the setting since installation. When I start Windows update, over the last couple of days, it offers no new updates, and yesterday I got the 8008005 message.

Very strange however, is the fact that when I view update history, it shows that updates have been installed over the last few days that i know I have not installed myself - again, I do not have the settings configured to 'install updates automatically', but to 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them'. If I start WU from the start menu and open task manger, and right click on WU and 'go to process', task manger highlights explorer.exe.

Also, I have navigated to the file location and tried to manually execute wuapp.exe, and nothing happens, nor does anything happen when I try to execute wuauclt.exe from the file location.

I have tried:

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter - Microsoft Windows Help

But this does not seem to have fixed the issue... Any advice would be gratefully received!
