Windows Update is both Installed and Not Installed

So I have been trying to work through my Windows Update issues, turns out it was majorly broken. I think I have it mostly working now. My issue I am having is down to one specific update that I downloaded a separate installer for. It failed partway through installation and now I am completely stuck.

I am trying to get KB3033929 installed, it is required for me to install Oculus software. Oculus installer says I do not have the hotfix and will not install. Running the Microsoft WUSA installer says KB3033929 is already installed and cannot be installed. Running the command-line 'wusa /uninstall "package_path"' says that the update is not installed so it can't be uninstalled. Running the command-line 'wusa /install "package_path"' says that the update *is* installed already.

So it is clearly stuck in some indeterminate state where it is simultaneously installed and not installed and I am going to have to do some manual cleaning I assume. I am comfortable manually editing whatever I have to do, I just don't know where or how to fix this. I haven't been able to find anything with this specific problem. Anyone have any ideas how to proceed short of an industrial sized shredder?

Hi Erasmus,
can you check that KB 3035131, is installed if not Install, it should then allow KB3033929 to install properly.

torchwood thanks for the reply. I searched for KB3035131 in installed updates in Control Panel and it did not show up, so I downloaded it and attempted to run it, the installer said it is already installed. I tried to uninstall it and the installer says it is not installed. So apparently this problem is bigger than just the one update! :/

I downloaded and installed that but it did not appear to have multiple modes? It has not changed anything with installing the updates. I apparently had 2 more rounds of updates through windows update but that hasn't changed anything either. I also ran the SURT which also did not change anything :/

SitRep: Still broken, currently know of KB3033929 and KB3035131 that are stuck in limbo.

Any more ideas what is causing these updates to be stuck in limbo or am I stuck with a full system reinstall?

Turn off windows updates

That KB was supposed to fix another bugged KB 2949927, if that KB is installed uninstall it, they gave everyone major headaches.

then

From an elevated command mode can you run the following, ( C = current system )

cd C:\Windows\WinSxS
ren pending.xml pending2.xml


REBOOT

Try Kb3033929 from the standalone installer,

If install is successfull reset WU to normal
