Hi there,

I have a problem with Windows Update - it continually fails to install update KB2966583 (which is about 2.5MB) and brings up error code 800736B3. I have tried the update troubleshooter for Windows, the update readiness tool and hotfix.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Apologies - the CBS file was too big earlier. I've uploaded a smaller version now!

Please don't be impatient - I have real life outside the forums to contend with, as well as about 30 threads to worry about! ;)

The essential problem here appears to surround this error...

I'll have to do some research on it - but
I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

You posted the COMPONENTS.Log file - not the COMPONENTS (no extension) File I requested. The .log file is merely a record of changes and useless for diagnostic purposes.

I may have found where the problem lies - hopefully it's fixed now...

I've uploaded a file - nnoaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY %userprofile%\desktop\nnoaa\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

I've followed the instructions, the copy went through. I've rebooted and run the CheckSUR - here's the log. What do I do next?

Bingo!

Now if we're VERY lucky, you should be able to do a Check for Updates.

Then attempt to install ONLY the oldest found update and cross your fingers - if/when it fails, post the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file and the new CBS data

No such luck - the update didn't work again :( Same error as before. I've attached the log file and the CBS data.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command.

REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections"

copy and post the result

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

That looks normal - but just in case...

Open an Elevated COmmand Prompt, and run the following commands...

proxycfg
proxycfg -D

Post the results ( the first should tell us the current settings, and the second should set them back to default)
