Windows update not completing search for updates on new VM install

I am attempting to install a fresh Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64 (Retail) virtual machine. When switching to Audit Mode to attempt to install drivers and updates before setting up the final users (the way I normally do), I find that Windows update gets stuck forever (apparently) at "Checking for Updates..." after the single update to the new Windows Update. I have also tried this without going through the Audit Mode on a separate fresh install, I had the exact same issue, so I do not believe that was the cause.

There have been several threads like this lately. A couple of them seem to have been solved by letting the search continue for hours - like 5 to 10 hours. If that does not cure the issue, then others might be able to help you with the files that you posted.
