Solved Windows Update Not Responding

When I go to Control Panel-System and Security-Windows Update, and click on the button that says Check for Updates, nothing happens. No error codes, just nothing. The most it will do is flicker, as if it refreshed the page, but that's it. I ran the sfc scan in the command prompt, and that didn't do it. The CBS file is attached. I also ran Malwarebytes, and it found a few things, so I had it remove them. Avast has found nothing. I'm thinking whatever I got infected with corrupted something. And in my haste, I failed to research what the infections were. :banghead: I'm now trying to run SURT, but it won't install. I get a error message window stating : Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247. I'm stuck, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.


Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

Also, I just got a pop-up window stating that "This computer is not running a genuine copy of Windows". I wonder if this is part of the problem. Yet, under Control Panel-System and Security-System, it shows that Windows is activated. lol Error code is 0X8004fe21. If I click "resolve now" and run the legit check, it wants me to buy Win7, which is not good, as the copy I'm running came installed on my laptop, so it's a legit copy, not some downloaded garbage.

I tried that SURT as you instructed, but that's the one I already tried, and fails to install per my first post. I deleted and re-downloaded it, and I get the same installation error.

Wouldn't you know it, while copying the log info, windows update alerted me to new updates! So that's working now! Thank you so much for the help! :D Hopefully that fixed the "genuine Windows" annoyance as well. lol
