My old hard drive was dying, so I installed a new1tb Seagate HD. On to my Sony Vaio windows 7 Home prem 64 bit machine

Now my windows update does not work, nor am I able to download anything from Microsoft. The error says Windows update stats the service is not running and I should restart my machine. I have tried this and it does not work

I have tried a number of solutions I found on line with no success. From what I understand it has something to do with the new hard drive I have.

If anyone know how to fix this, I would love to hear from you.

It has nothing to do with the hard drive. It does have everything to do with how you installed the OS on the new hard drive and the settings you have for Windows Update and the system in general.

By default Win update is Not set to do anything and until you actually chose whether to Auto download and install or Notify and don't download and install or Don't do anything, IE check for updates manually, Win update will not work.

Then again it could be your Date, Time and location are not set correctly. That will also stop Win update from working.

Hello Myrsoc and welcome to Seven Forums.

A couple of questions just to clarify some things.

1. How did you install Windows 7 on the new hard drive? Did you do a factory recovery using Sony Vaio recovery disks you previously made? A clean install using a Windows 7 installation disk? A previous system image? Something else?
2. Was the new hard drive already partitioned and formatted?
How To Partition a Hard Drive in Windows 7
3. Are you experiencing any other problems with your installed Windows 7 (besides not being able to download any updates or anything from Microsoft?)
4. Can you post a maximized screen shot of your disk managment?

5. Have you tried resetting Windows Updates?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all of your advice. I downloaded the Intel Rapid Storage drivers and that fixed the problem.
Thanks again!
