Windows Update Readiness Tool doesn't run.

My Windows Update is failing. For whatever reason, my Vaio cannot install Windows 7 SP1. The update fails and it returns variations of unknown error or errors whose numbers are nowhere to be found when I search. (I've tried it 7 times, got 5 5 error numbers and 2 unknown errors.)

Right now, I'm following the troubleshooting steps at microsoft.com. It had me run the Windows Update troubleshooter, which claimed to make changes so the update would install. It didn't install.

The next step is to download and install the System Update Readiness Tool. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo....-Readiness-Tool

The site claims that it could take "several minutes" and to not close the installer "even if the progress bar appears to stop, don't cancel the installation." Fine, I haven't. But the progress bar hasn't moved. As in, there's no green in the bar at all. It has been running for over two hours. I know I got the right file; I checked my Windows 7 Version before I downloaded.

It's just hanging at "Installing Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) (update 1 of 1)... "

How long do I wait? Have any of you encountered this? What do I do next? And thank you, thank you, thank you for even reading this. I'm technically adept enough to follow directions - but that's where my computer expertise ends. When I searched the forums (maybe I didn't search well enough?) I didn't find this problem, but others mentioning similar issues with the SP1 update and other people successfully running the updater...

I download myself and I waited and had the exact same thing that the bar was not showing green for awhile, but it finally stated that it was installed.

I too am having trouble installing Windows 7 SP1 on both my laptops. I will try installing it tomorrow will let you know

Two hours can be 'normal', but it is unusual. The green bar is notoriously bad at indication actual progress.
It sounds as if you have some significant problems, since I would have expected the green bar to stall at the 50% mark if anywhere (this is after the decompression).

How much space is there on your hard drive? - this is a large 'install' and can require a fair amount of room to manouvre. I would suggest that you would need a minimum of 5GB free space.

Have you already run SFC?

I ended up getting the tool to run but my computer did blue screen randoimly last night (although it is working atm with all the normal bugs [display issues with files, firefox taking forever to load, problems with wmp crashing etc]) So anyways here is the thread I made upon your request and I will attach the CBS log in that thread.
