I am running windows 7 home premium. When I click "Check for updates" on Windows Update, I get this error: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." However, the services are running (well started, not sure if that's different), see attached.

I've tried restarting my computer several times and running the fix here: "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates" error message when you try to install updates
I've tried manually starting the service but get this error:
Code:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:\Windows\system32>net start bits
The requested service has already been started.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2182.

C:\Windows\system32>net start wuauserv
The requested service has already been started.

C:\Windows\system32>

It looks like there was a solution here (http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ndows-7-update-service-not-running-error.html), but it's been removed by the poster. :( Any suggestions? PLEASE

The download you attempted wouldn't have cured your problem anyhow - the file was merely the settings for some of the involved services, and there was obviously nothing wrong with those, or your eventual fix wouldn't have worked either.
I remove the files I upload as fixes after a couple of weeks specifically to prevent people attempting to install random 'fixes' which will probably not work, and could potentially harm other installations.

Please be more careful about how you approach fixing problems in the future - it'll save you a lot of trouble in the long run - but congratulations for managing to find the correct solution for your own problem!
