I've been trying to solve an issue Windows Update has been causing for me, but I haven't been able to change any of the settings to help me figure out how to stop it.
Following the posting rules for this forum, I ran SURT, which claimed to install properly, and I ran sfc /verifyonly, which claimed I had some issues. (I wasn't sure what I needed to back up at the time, so I didn't actually run it.)
Windows update itself 'works', no errors are generated. It will automatically download and install updates, but there is one I don't want, and I can't change the settings to ignore that one update, because the 'service is not running'.
The forum attachment system kept timing out while trying to upload the CBS folder, so I used a dropbox link instead
Hello and welcome blargwall - now as I read it you cannot "hide" the update you don't want? If you are unsure of what I mean and I don't want to sound condescending - if you download the updates and in the result if you right click that update or any update for that matter - you do not want - and choose "Hide" it will not or should not reappear again. If it does as is the case sometimes just re-hide it.
Now I would be running the sfc as is and this as well because that is what I do if my machines show any signs of running not quite as they should it -they are the very basic scans and don't take long. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2 this will attempt any repairs to the filing system and I usually do both in safe mode so that there is the least interference form other material on the machine.
