Solved Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes

Great. Type Activation in the Cortana search bar and follow the link. It will start settings and should show you are Activated with a "Digital License".

Ok mate the link I gave you was for the straight ISO from Heidoc and as far as I know it is still available you should be able to make a bootable disk from that ISO and do a clean install using that generic code.

Like I think I said before it might be worth posting in the sister Ten Forum and ask Brink if you go to this
Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums he will give the low down on everything.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Sounds like a older existing install and you were not clean installing win-7 ?..............
.............................................
7) After all of the above is completed you can use Option 3 below to reset all of the windows updates components
Windows Update - Reset

I just wanted to say, whether or not the above-referred to reply (post #2) applies to the particular problem someone is having (and they are often subtly different), great respect to the kind and knowledgeable poster for the care and clarity of his explanation (if that's not too "creepy-bum-lick").:)

Exactly what separates a forum such as this as good forum from a bad forum.

BG :)

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Sounds like a older existing install and you were not clean installing win-7 ?

1) When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

Thank you!

Mild Rant:

I think is absolutely pathetic that MS allows something like this to happen. I let my PC run almost 24 hours (PC I was setting up, didn't need to use it) before finally trying to do something besides rebooting and trying update again.
I just don't see how the typical user would be able to fix a problem like this. MS suggestions did nothing.

Of course, the answer is on sevenforums.com

I cannot install KB3020369. I get an error as "This update is not applicable to your computer.".

Please be sure to download and install the correct version for your architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).
If you still get that error, then perhaps 3020369 may have been superseded (in which case you don't need it and I would not fuss about it).
KB3172605 seems to be the most important one to fix the WU client issues.

Having said that, all of these fixes for the updating problem were devised a few months ago.
It's possible that the October, November or December Security + Quality Rollups might also fix the problem, as some have suggested at other computer help venues.
Without a test box or VM in which to research that, I cannot say for sure.
Perhaps someone else might be able to test it?

Let us know how it goes,

MM

Hi,
You either don't have sp1 installed or you tried to install the wrong bit = 32 bit instead of 64 bit or the other way around.
Which version of windows do you have installed 32 bit or 64 bit,
System Type - 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64)

If still no joy post this report in a new thread,

I'm trying to install Windows6.1-KB3020369-x64.msu.

5) Then manually install KB3172605 main article page with all versions,
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172605

KB3172605 download links,
Win-7 32 bit
https://download.microsoft.com/down...A9C-6B30C3E1735A/Windows6.1-KB3172605-x86.msu

Win-7 64 bit
https://download.microsoft.com/down...67F-C713F7821374/Windows6.1-KB3172605-x64.msu

6) After switch your windows update and service settings back to what you had prior and manually check for updates and the rest should show up shortly.

I skipped installing this update and installed Windows6.1-KB3172605-x64.msu (step 5). Then I applied step 6. Now some updates are being downloaded.

That update was released a long time ago so it would be weird for an older install not to have it already :)

I just applied your fix to 4 different desktops at 3 locations. Each was taking forever to update and each was missing KB3172605. After a manual install of that older KB each updated within minutes.
