Solved Windows Upgrades after Restoration

I've had to reformat/restore my laptop (purchased Feb 2010). Windows Updater is telling me I have 78 Important updates (135.7 Mb) and 6 Optional updates (130 Mb). Do I need to install all the Important updates? Do I just hit install and upload them all in go?

See if the Windows 7 SP 1 is listed and if it is, install that first all by itself.

If you have MS Office installed, see it the SP1 for that is listed and install it separately also.


Then recheck for updates and install them in small groups of similar types until they are all installed, yes you do need to install all the listed updates.

Yes, you would want to install all important and critical updates whenever they become available to help keep your Windows 7 up to date.

Install ONLY SP1 first if available.

I find that installing only the ones selected by default first help to avoid any issues with them conflicting. Afterwards, check updates again, continue to install the checked one, afterwards check the ones you would like to install.

Trying to download the whole lot in one go will likely result in loads of failed updates.

As already mentioned, SP1 rolls up most of those updates so if you can, download and install that first, then carefully check any others you think you need.

Any you don't want just right-click them and choose Hide so you don't keep getting offered them.

Many thanks for the quick response. It was while downloading a number of updates that my problems started. Was unable to restore (all my restore points had been deleted). This is the 3rd time I've had to reinstall.

I'll download SP1 and see how that works.

Thanks for the help. Eventually managed to locate and download Windows 7 SP1 and Office 2007 SP1. All running smoothly (he said with fingers crossed).
