Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit upgrade problem

Hello Everyone,

I am attempting to upgrade my Dell Studio 1555 laptop, which currently has 32 bit Windows Vista on it, to 64 bit Windows 7.

My problem is that after purchasing the Windows 7 Professional 64 bit version from Microsoft, not some other site, burning the .ISO file to a DVD-R and attempting to run the setup.exe file I keep getting an error message that states that this version of Windows is not compatible with the current version of Windows. I did some searching about this and discovered that I needed to change the BIOS order to have the CD/DVD drive checked first when booting up and then restart my computer and look for a "press any key" message to appear. I proceeded to do this and restart my computer, however no "press any key" message appeared and my laptop simply booted up like it has always done.

I know that the paragraph may be TLR so basically what is going on is that my computer is not booting from the CD and so I can not do the custom install that I would like.

I tried disabling the hard drive and forcing it to recognize the CD. However when doing this a message popped up that there was no OS recognized and therefore didn't boot.

I have checked and my laptop is able to run 64 bit on it so that is not the problem. I'm guessing that something was not burned correctly when I burned the CD or that the .ISO file is missing some key file that it needs to boot from the CD. Any help would be appreciated. Also if more info is needed please let me know.

Probably your DVD drive doesn't recognize DVD-R. Try a DVD+R.

Try burning the ISO again using the program at the link below to DVD not CD, burn it at no more than 4x speed and choose to let the program to verify the burn before it finishes and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

As you are upgrading from 32bit to 64bit, you will need to do a clean install.

1) clean your HD, best to use the clean all command.

I will give the slower burn a shot and look into cleaning my HD.

You could also consider doing the install from a USB flash drive, if you have a 4GB or larger one available.

Use a USB Key to Install Windows 7

(Simple with a FAT32 drive. It's more complex with one formatted as NTFS.)

It has the additional advantage of proceeding much more quickly than from the DVD.

Does your laptop permit you to set the boot order on a one-time basis with the F12 hotkey? you may find that more convenient than changing the boot order in the BIOS settings.
