I like both operating systems but prefer 7 both in looks and usability (i changed my vista theme to AeroGlassVG, the default theme is very ugly IMO), it also boots a lot faster than vista sp2 on my machine, but there is slighty better driver support in vista for my hardware, though thats obviously expected as win7 is not even final yet.

driver support for vista was utterly horrible when it was in beta and for a time afterwards. We've been fortunate with win7.

Vista got a really bad rap in its early stages, but it's turned out for me just fine. It's too early in the game for a fair comparison between it and Windows 7 really...IMHO.

I'm not going to be diplomatic about Windows Vista. Vista SUCKED. Simple as. I am still one pissed off customer who was suckered into spending around £140 on software which (especially on release) was just not up to scratch. I don't remember XP having the same amount of flak when that came out? I have a right to be angry about Vista after spending my money on it.

We have spent enough time trying to flog a dead horse, it's time to move on and hope that Windows 7 can make up for the mistake that was Vista. So far, Windows 7 has really impressed me. I don't suppose Microsoft will give me my money back on Vista? Oh sorry TWO Vistas, as I wasted money putting it on another PC too!

I'm with Jimbo and others. R.I.P. Vista. Long Live 7!!

Oh it did, right up until SP2!!! the thing XP had in its favor was that it's predecessors 98 & ME were really bad so the jump was easier to make.

I for one will be installing SP2 on both of my Vista installations when it is finally released. As a member of both forums, I find that it is useful to be able to boot into either OS when necessary in order to help out people on these forums, especially when a query is OS specific. Plus, I have paid for Vista, and whilst it is still supported, I'm going to use it, although I admit that at the moment I am spending most of my time in W7 7068 (soon to be RC when it comes out).

I can't agree with you 100% on that mate. Look at the specs of my pc on my signiture. Now can you explain why Vista still gives me grief?? As for 'inexperienced user', I actually ran my own PC repair business a couple of years ago, so that doesn't really apply either! To say that you never had any major problems with all those OS's, I'll guess you must be that 1 in a million that's extremely lucky with Microsoft software! Of course, it depends on how much you use your PC and what you use it for. If you are a power user like myself and others on here, you will eventually find all the 'niggles' and problems with all OS's. Vista and ME have been the worst for me and I'm sure others might agree on that.

You don't have to, I said the Majority of cases.

Look at the specs of my pc on my signiture. Now can you explain why Vista still gives me grief??

No I can't you will have to tell me about your problems before I can comment.

There were and still are problems. I believe mostly due to hardware and drivers, which would put the problems with the Manufacturers.

There were and still are a lot of software problems with the UAC, again not really Microsoft's problem. They did have the foresight to include a work around for a lot of cases though.

As for 'inexperienced user', I actually ran my own PC repair business a couple of years ago, so that doesn't really apply either!

Its not my intention to put anyone down just to point out a few facts. :)

To say that you never had any major problems with all those OS's, I'll guess you must be that 1 in a million that's extremely lucky with Microsoft software! Vista and ME have been the worst for me and I'm sure others might agree on that.

I have had more than my fair share of problems, especially when I started with Win 95/98 and I still have problems occasionally today. But to blame an OS for my own ignorance, because, "I didn't understand" would be very wrong.

Yes I do some times get problems with Vista one of which was "Internet Local only"
It took a lot of research to fix my problem and it needed a lot of patience as well.
But I never thought about Vista bashing as an answer.

Vista got off to a bad start. As I mentioned above this was part due to drivers and part due to software not running A lesson that Microsoft has leaned with 7. This was not however a fault of Vista. Correctly written Drivers /Software, work!!
The UAC is also another oft hated part of Vista, The UAC is there for security it is very good at its job. Like it or hate it still doesn't make a bad OS.
TBH I hardly see the UAC in day to day use.
Windows 7 is based very much on Vista
Lastly, When XP was introduced everyone hated it (does this sound familiar?) 3 service packs later it is apparently God's gift to computing.

:p

Hi all
I think this thread is turning into a Love it or Hate it.

That wasn't the question -- my point was (and still is) to query what would be the point now of Microsoft spending a lot of resources into supporting VISTA when W7 so far has shown itself to be stable, pretty well 99% compatable, far less demanding on Hardware, and now with "XP compatability mode" making an XP==>VISTA==>W7 upgrade unnecessary.

All they need to do now is just "Orphan the OS" with security updates and offer people who purchased VISTA say in the last few months a FREE or small dollar cost for a W7 upgrade.

You don't have to be an MBA in seeing this will save you A LOT OF DOSH. No point continuing to develop an OS that will be replaced as soon as RTM is out. In any case Microsoft have ALREADY announced that anybody buying VISTA after June I think will be entitled to a free upgrade anyway so I think the case is proven.

My other point about XP outlasting VISTA is still valid -- due to the fact that there is an AWFUL lot of legacy hardware and apps still out there that will NEVER or CANT be upgraded -- Manufacturer out of business etc etc.

Corporates are a bit like trying to stop a fully laden Oil tanker in a hurry. There is SO much inertia that it often takes YEARS to implement a corporate wide I.T change etc.

I remember an exercise way back around 2000 at SHELL. They wanted to implement a Universal Desktop type scheme whatever hardware you had and wherever you were in the world you could access it.

Idea was excellent but I think it took them at least 5 years to get the thing decently half way "workable" even if being far from finished. I'm not sure of the current state of play -- maybe a new manager decides they want something else --no idea.

Cheers
jimbo

Agreed 100%. Except Win95 because well... it's unstable as hell. I remember those (now in XP) P3 with win95 at school that were used for a printer server in each room. For fun, I touched ONE key on the keyboard and it gave a BSOD almost 100% of the time :D LOL.

But yeah, I never really got any problem with any OS in my life. Well maybe some driver support :
1. A 2004 Lexmark 3-in-1 printer with Vista... didn't remember the model. Lexmark wouldn't give a **** about doing Vista drivers. Result : bought a Samsung laser printer with Vista support. Anyway, I had only problems with this 3-in-1 printer anyway. So, it's not Vista's fault, it's Lexmark's.

2. I couldn't get my Datel USB Wireless to work but hopefully, some people on the net made a Vista port of the drivers.

3. For my XBox360 controller, I did not want to install Microsoft coz they sucked. Once gain, Internet saved me with XBCD. XBCD is XP only but their forum had a Vista port : both 32-bits and 64-bits!

Legacy hardware problems? Hell, I have a very old Logitech controller and it still works on Vista.

The only REAL legacy problem I ever had was with Windows XP. I couldn't find XP drivers for a Voodoo 3 video card for my mom's 2001 computer. LOL. That's because they were bought back by nVidia ahah

Anyway, long life to BOTH Vista and Seven.
