Solved Windows Vista-Windows 7

Hi there,

Just a Question about windows 7. Basically i am currently running windows vista home basic 32 bit. I was wondering if it is possible then to use uprgrade media to custom install my pc to windows 7 64 bit?

Hello 09greenj, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. You can only do a clean install or Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version when going from 32-bit to 64-bit.

You'll have to boot the 64 bit DVD, choose Custom Install, use Drive Options to delete, repartition and format before install. The installer should see the previous qualifying Vista to allow use of Upgrade key during install. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

If you want a cleaner install by wiping the HD first, you'll have to leave the Product key blank during install and do the quick registry workaround given here after install to activate Upgrade version key on a cleaned HD: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

Yeah my pcs 64 bit compatiable. i am going to clean install from vista home basic 32 to windows 7 professional 64 using a upgrade disk. just to make sure this is good to go?

Hello 09greenj, welcome to Seven Forums!


The best way forward is to do a complete wipe of the entire Hard Disk Drive, have a look through the information below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, use Step One of this tutorial at the link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive.

• Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
• If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.

Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional Primary partitions or an Extended partition after the installation completes if you choose.

Right i just ran uprgrade advisor and it said i need to custom install and then re-install programmes and that should work.
