Hi,

The following suggests a significant corruption of your Windows installation:

Licensing Data-->
Input Error: Can not find script file "C:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs".
Please, run the following from an elevated cmd window:

sfc / scannow

Once completed, please run this tool again, and copy and paste the results back here (ignore any error message if they pop-up):

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

If you get the same error, then its possible that an activation update is not installed. Please check to see that this is installed on your system:

Update for Microsoft Windows (KB971033)

Your installation is non-genuine
The Product Key in use is an ASUS OEM_SLP Key one - but the motherboard is a retail one.
There are signs that RemoveWAT has been used to prevent Windows discovering the status.

Unless there is a COA sticker for Windows on the case of the machine, the ONLY thing you can do is purchase a new Full Retail license for whichever version of Windows you actually need.

Note that for most people, Ultimate is an unnecessary luxury, and Pro will provide everything you would need, unless you require Bitlocker, or multiple OS language packs. Home Premium is good enough for most people that do not require access to Domain-based networking, or XP Mode (It's what I use 90% of the time!)

Paying for a full retail version is not necessary, he can purchase an OEM System builder license and reinstall. For roughly 50% the cost of a full retail license of home premium.Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - Operating Systems OEM System Builder licenses are only valid for a single machine, and cannot be transferred to a different system.

I would suggest a complete wipe and reinstall for peace of mind, depending on where the OS originated, it could have any number of different types of malware.

Might I suggest that you read the System Builder License terms before suggesting that as a solution?
Localized Licenses

Note that the terms changed for Win 7, and now require that the installation is sold to a third party - thereby definitively (at least in theory) preventing 'enthusiasts' from purchasing OEM licenses for their own use. There are obvious ways around this restriction.

However, I would still recommend against purchasing an OEM license for such a purpose. An OEM license is NOT transerable to a new motherboard for anything other than warranty-replacement conditions. while a Retail License can be transferred at the drop of the provebial cap, with no significant questions asked. A Retail License also entitles the user to 90 days free support from MS for ANY software problem (IIRC, limited to two incidents) - otherwise costing significant sums, and also provides both 32-bit and 64-bit disks, while the OEM pack contains only one disk, *either* 32-bit *or* 64-bit.

I understand that the license changed with Windows 7, I suggested an OEM license because he purchased the machine from a third party and it should have had a valid license to being with.

In that case the proper License is an Upgrade, not OEM - unless the machine already has a Win7 license COA, in which case it's just a case of downloading the ISO and using that for a clean install otgether with the COA license.

However, this machine is based on a retail motherboard - and if this was a 'commercial' vendor, selling a 'new' machine, then the chances are that there never was a legal install of Windows on it. This is why I asked if there was a COA sticker. If there was, then the machine is at least licensed for some version of WIndows. If there isn't thena Full Retail license id the proper way to go - after chiselling a refund out of the vendor.

@Irontank - please tell us if you have a COA sticker on the machine. If so, for what version and edition of Windows is it valid?

What I meant: He got sold a machine with an OEM SLP key, which isn't a valid license. I was assuming he did not have a COA sticker. You are correct in that if he does have a valid license key for a previous OS, he could just purchase an upgrade.

When I wrote "It should have had a valid license to begin with" the builder should have purchased a license for the system, not that Irontank had a license for a previous OS.

I apologize if any of my posts seem confrontational, that is not my intent. Just trying to get the OP running with a valid license :)

Acknowledged, and accepted - please also understand that is also my aim, and that is why I am against the use of an OEM license in these circumstances, since it is at the least a technical breach of the License terms to buy and install an OEM license for your own use, and could in theory lead to MS revoking the license and blocking the Key.

In that case your options are limited - unless you can force your vendor to do the honorable thing. Note that in the US, the FBI are responsible for counterfeit software, and the threat of bringing them into the picture can work wonders :)

These options will keep you completely legal and valid.

1) Purchase a Full Retail copy of Windows and reformat/reinstall

2) Employ a tech to install an OEM copy of Windows - they then take responsibility for Windows support.

3) Install another OS such as Ubuntu.

You should realise that the chances of MS actually doing anything about you self-installing an OEM copy are pretty close to zero - but they are not zero. If you want to go that route, then fine - but another reason that I don't recommend it is simply that your motherboard is already at least a year old, and if/when it dies, then you would also have to purchase another license for windows together with the replacement board.

I agree with this guy
Try partitioning hard drive and installing Ubuntu.
You can use wine for the window applications
Ubuntu is lightweight and fast. Although I have windows xp windows 7, and ubuntu :D I like Ubuntu of them all it's unique and fast. But I always go back to windows because I use it for practically everything
