At least, that's what I think. When I start the pc, windows will boot to the splash screen, hang hang for a minute and then reboot. Just before it does, I can hear the hdd spinning down.

Safe mode won't work, system restore won't work, loading last know configuration and system restore won't work.

Any suggestions?

I think this happend after a windows update. After I tried "repair you computer" I got a number of errors, the first 2 are 6.1.7600.16385. This is a windows update I think

Did you try repair options from booted external media - e.g. cd/dvd?

For future reference keeping a recent system image (or more) would enable you to get out of unforeseen messes. The problem could be anything from an installation issue like yours or virus problem to a HDD failure.

After running sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=f:\windows it says it found some damaged files but could't repair them all.

Hmm, interesting thread. Last Thursday my workstation laptop installed a bunch of MS updates and later crashed big time. Tried repairs - said a known DLL had failed. Later an error list said it was due to a "patch".

Was able to boot a live Linux distro and download my last four days of work that hadn't been backed up to the remote server (thank you Puppy Linux!!!).

I messed around for over an hour, got into repair screens but roll-backs stated they didn't work. Kept trying...after another hour or more a reboot suddenly worked!

Checkdisk ran OK, no other "obvious" problems with assorted utilities.

The system rolled back to the day before my last Windows update - I checked the update list and marked everything there as "hide" so I will not load those again!

Still not sure which file was the cause.

GEWB

If you're game I would reinstall each update singly with a restore point. When you find the one which caused the problem, Restore and then open a Support case here in our Updates forum and on Windows Update website.

If it were my personal computer I would do that but it is a company issued laptop. I've learned never to muck with company property.

If your Company has an IT area why not hand the problem over to them. If not and the Company is funny about you "mucking" with their laptop, they should send it out to an IT service shop.

Well, my IT department is 1,200 miles away (I work remote). Lappy has government data so not any Geek Squad tech can work on it. I'm pretty good at service (about 26 years experience) but my position is a Business Analyst and I respect the head of our IT/service department - will not go around him but I do ask him for permission to "do things" to the lappy. If he says OK, then I work on it, as I did over this weekend.

GEWB

Your IT people could also do a remote logon.

(Ummm, see the title of the thread. I do VPN in but that requires a working Windows computer.)

You mean the title of the thread you tacked onto I guess.
Given your constraints you may need to mail your laptop back to your company.
