Windows won't start, BSOD after boot screen

I had this error 2 weeks ago and tried 3 various Acronis images and the same error occoured.
I reinstalled windows and everything was fine for 2 weeks but now I have the same problem.
I reinstalled again but now when I install any catalyst driver (tried 4 different ones) the same error occours.

This is not an overheating problem as windows won't even start at all.

The problem is as I can't start my computer so I can't get at any dump files or use the BSOD tool.

Having to run windws without graphics drivers which defeats the object of having such a powerful card.

Win 7 Ultimate
Processor: Intel Q9550
Memory: 4GB Corsair Dominator PC2-8500
Motherboard: Asus Maximus II Formula
Graphics card: Radeon HD 4870 X2
Sound card: SupremeFX II HD Audio
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 850W

I hope this isn't a fault with my card as it's very expencive and only 18 monthe old.

Hope someone can help.

Can you boot into safe mode at all?
When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

Thanks for the reply ttran,

I have tried installing the drivers on a fresh OS install, I have tried V10.1 through 10.6 with the same result

I have tried rebedding the card and running with one memory stick. same result, the OS runs fine until I try and load the drivers, it even happens if I let windows update install them,

I am getting increasingly sure that this is a hardware issue but how come it works without the drivers if the card is faulty.

I could try to boot in safe mode. should I install the drivers again and then boot in safe after another BSOD?

You can install the driver in safe mode. Let's remove all trace of old driver using the tool I provided above, then reinstall the driver in safe mode and see how it works

The install I have hasn't had any video drivers installed yet.
I'll do a acronis image and do that.
It will require a restart, should resatart it normally or in safe mode again?

In safe mode now, I keep getting a "failed to load detection driver" error and the install stops
I Have tried v10.1 and v10.6

I'LL try and just install the driver using windows udate.


|EDIT: can't get update to run in safe mode.
Downloading driver only, hope that works

In the BIOS, have you set your graphic card to be primary

Looked thoroughly in bios and the only setting I could find with respect to Graphics was under Northbridge config / Initiate graphic adaptor
It was set to PEG/PCI

Stop code 116 is usually graphic card error, please read this article:

See if you can borrow different graphic card to test on your machine

The biggest problem is that my computer won't boot at all with the drivers installed this makes me suspect the card is a dud/

What are the chances that it is a fault with my graphics card?
it seems to work fine without the drivers so i can use my pc for basic stuff like video playback/

I am concidering getting a gt 240 (bit short of cash at the moment) but if it's a fault elsewhere then this will be a waste of money.

I have tried everything I can think of and don't know what to do.

EDIT , I've read a a fair of that thread already and it didn't help much, I don't think anyone has a spare card i can borrow unfortunately.

I have just installed a GT 240 card it worked perfectly so unfortunately it looks like my 4870 X2 is FUBAR,
I even installed the image from my fresh install from 2 weeks ago stripped out the ATI drivers with Driver Sweeper and the 240 works fine so I don't have to reinstall everything again, which is a huge relief as it takes me many hours to install all my software and set things up as I like it.

In 20 years of PC ownership0 I have never has a component fail before, isn't it typical that the first to go is the most expensive single component I have ever purchased.
I wouldn't mind if it had lasted longer that 18 months.
At least I've been lucky up to now.
