Hi,
I have gone to OS Windows 7 from XP Pro, this is the first time I have upgraded.
Can you tell me what I would want from my old PC.
My photos and files and possibly favourites.
I have an external drive to transfer stuff to and then back to the new OS.
Is there anything except personal stuff I need to bring across.
Thanks
Rodersss

Hi there
One of the biggest problems I had was that in Windows 7 there is no built in e-mail client like Outlook Express. (Pity Ms never kept it -- simple and even the dumbest Scrobbit on Earth could use it),

So if you want to save emails / contacts / address books then you will have to google as it's not so simple to copy this stuff.

I actually kept a Virtual Windows XP machine around just for using email until most of my emails are now on Outlook.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE WINDOWS LIVE. !!!

Cheers

Is there anything except personal stuff I need to bring across.

Generally, all you need is "personal stuff", plus bookmarks and email.

Personal stuff can be moved with the mouse.

Bookmarks are usually easily exported and reimported through your browser.

But email transfer can easily be a major pain and you may be in for an ordeal and need to rely on your Google-fu, depending on what email applications are used on the old and new systems.

Your first email move should be to locate the email files on the old system and make some sort of a direct copy of those complete folders to another hard drive for safekeeping---because your attempts at getting the email into the new system may result in corruption or loss. So make a backup copy before you even start.
