I have a laptop connection connected to ADSL 2+ via ethernet modem (non router) using Win XP.
I have a second laptop running Windows 7.

Both laptops have wi-fi.

How do I connect it so that I can use the internet connection via wi-fi on the Windows 7 laptop?

its not possible i dont think if you have no device capable of OUTPUTTING a wireless signal.. therefore nothing for the laptop internal wifi to connect to (make sense?) therfore purchasing a adsl router would simply solve the problem.... link below
D-Link Systems D-Link DSL-2640R Wireless G ADSL2+ 4-Port Modem Router Wireless router - 4-port switch (integrated) - EN, Fast EN, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g

this product would set you up for basic networking and more than likely be adequate for general browsing. have a look around they can sometime be found cheaper... remeber to search for an adsl2+ router..

Thanks for your answer.
Previously I have had two laptops with wifi wirelessly networked using Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing but at present cannot figure it out between Win XP and Win 7 with Win XP having the original internet connection. I'm sure it is possibly in someway via software as both laptops have wifi.

do you have a device capable of outputting a wireless signal e.g router, access point.
also if you dont need wifi you could just connnect your laptop to your desktop via a network cable and turn on internet connetction sharing or bridge the connections.. (thats assuming you have two ethernet ports on your desktop) but that seems pointless as i gather you want to have a wifi connection so you can use the laptops anywhere within your house? (am i right?) btw do you happen to have any spare wifi adapters, routers or access points then maybe i could help you on from there?
thanks for quick reply

Nope, only equipment I currently have are the two inbuilt wifi cards in the laptops. A solution would just be to buy an adsl2+ router but seeing as though I had the system running as I wanted previously with two xp os's using ICS, I am hoping to replicate the same system between these two. It is possible to have 7 as the server and xp as the client using a freeware program called Connectify but I'm hoping to do it the other way around xp - 7.

im curious how was you able to share a wifi signal via ics if you have no device outputting a WIFI signal?? i very much recommend the easy option of buyin a router... will benefit you with all your needs plus simplyfing everything and you will also not need to leave a machine on constantly drawing power to just share an internet connection..

My inbuilt wifi adapter within the laptop is able to output a wifi signal. They are both just standard wifi adapters in laptops and they are both capable of outputting and receiving signals.

as far as im aware laptops are only recieving devices..but still it would be a lot less trouble for you by purchasing a cheap router..

haha I know, but that's what I'm trying to avoid via software which I have successfully done before via two XP OS's so I'm sure there is a way to do between XP and 7.

Basically I'm trying to acheive Windows ICS which I had previously in XP but am not sure how to configure between XP and 7

ics is located when you hover over your internet connection then right click and netwroking and sharing center.then change adapter settings.. then turn on the sharing of connection under it.. maybe you should try it that way? is that the method you are wondering how to do?

I have tried fiddling with that but cannot seem to get it configured correctly to work. With XP to XP it was a wizard running it which automatically configured it. I have manually configured it previously and I'm probly just missing one step or I might have an IP conflict with my wireless network and my adsl modem but I'm not 100% sure. With two different OS's and the older one being the host, I'm unable to configure it successfully.

could you run me through the steps you are taking to share your connection and maybe i could tell you what you are doing wrong... and are you trying to get the xp machine to output a wifi connection if im right?
