I have a compaq presario cq57 laptop previosly running windows 7 I took it somewhere to get the memory upgraded and they installed ubuntu for some reason so I wiped the hard drives and inserted my windows xp setup dvd and it always stops with this message:
a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have seen this screeen, restart your computer. follow these steps: check for viruses, remove any newly installed hard drives, run CHDSK for hard drive corruption

I ran hard drive diagnostics and memory tests = no problems
viruses = I cant check for those it has no os
hard drives (newly installed) = I have never installed any hard drives on this computer and the memory upgrade never happened

the error code is: STOP: 0x0000007B

Why are you trying to install a dead OS on that PC? Reinstall the Win7 version that came it which license you own for its life, and is listed on the COA sticker attached to PC along with Product key used for reinstall.

Everything needed to get and keep a perfect install is in Clean Reinstall Windows 7 including how to locate reinstall media if you don't have it. Let us know any questions you have.

gregrocker, I have no installation dvd for 7 what I was going to do was install xp then download 7 iso off the internet plus I dont want some of the OEM's crapware

Again, obtaining Win7 media along with everything else needed to get and keep a perfect install is discussed in Clean Reinstall Windows 7. You may need to borrow another PC to extract, unlock, burn or otherwise create the media.

What is the Win7 licensed version on COA sticker exactly? Is the key still readable?

yes I have a key for 7 ultimate 32bit and one for 64 bit one is on coa one I obtained from the internet I will try to create installation dvd

Why is it that Ultimate shipped with that PC? Should normally be Home Premium.

You can reinstall either 32 or 64 bit with each key. Use 32 bit for 3 GB or less RAM.

I didnt say ultimate was shipped I installed it home premium is worthless crap

Wrong. Home Premium is the exact same OS as Ultimate with just a few extra expensive features unlocked in the higher version. Which of these features did you need causing you to pay $200+ more than the free OS that came with your PC?

I would reinstall the OS that came with the PC unless you actually own a copy of Ultimate and need the few extra expensive features that come with it. :sarc:

I need the expensive features thats why I installed it but I do have a key for it

Could you post a website where you got the Ultimate COA key or could you tell us how you got the key?
