windows7 pro activation

I had to change my hard drive as the other failed,now when i try to activate windows im told this key can only be used for upgrading not clean installs,is there a way round this without re installing windowsxp then upgrading to windows 7 as I have now re installed and set up all my programs.Im sure I done a clean installl from a formatted disc before.Any help please

Follow this tutorial
Dont give the key number when asked.
Make the install
Test it
Install programs etc and make sure it works.

Then activate by phone

The problem is that the upgrade key does not recognize the fact that you had an underlying OS that quaifies for an upgrade.
If you have problem with the phone activation, you will be elevated to a rep. Just explain the facts and you will be validiated.

Thanks tried that and would not work so been given tech support number which is an 0870 number mon-fri

Not surprised that it did not work. Your computer appears that it does not qualify for an upgrade. Call the number and explain, you will be given a validation number and all will be ok.

If you install Upgrade version to a new or wiped HD then you must do one of the workarounds given here to activate it: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

The registry change is easiest - set a restore point first in case you goof. Then activate at Computer>Properties link.

As long as you have a qualifying XP or Vista on hand which you do not use again while it is acting as qualifier for Upgrade version Win7, then you do not have to have either installed to clean install Upgrade version.
