Winows Aero keeps changing to Windows basic

Hi,I do a lot of video editing with different software and just lately when rendering a video,some programes are crashing after about 5 mins,and some change from Windows aero to basic and an alert in the taskbar shows "The color scheme has been changed to Windows Basic - The current color scheme has exceeded its allowed memory so the color scheme has been automatically changed to improve performance. Click to see more information."
I've tried this ("Fix Run menu > sysdm.cpl > Advanced Tab > performance > select adjust for best performance > make sure you do not allow Windows to choose for you because your computer does not know whats best --- Make sure Enable Aero Peek is checked") but it made no difference.
I've noticed a few people who have this problem also have high spec gaming pc's.

Also when using Camtasia screen capture after about a minute i get alert your pc is running slow and changes to Windows basic.
I've run the Windows aero troubleshooter and it says there are no issues with anything.
My Windows experience score is 5.4.Thanks for any help.

Hi there
the problem is that some of these video editing programs try and address the actual HARDWARE and BIOS directly rather than use the published Windows API's -- this is done often for "performance" reasons but with newer graphics cards and faster processors the need to "bypass" the Windows kernel is much diminished.

If a program runs like this it may well have corrupted / altered some of the W7 internal system areas leading to all sorts of messages and potential problems.

One could get away with this to an extent in XP because the OS was basically fully developed and the design was well known by the developers although still not a good idea to do this.

W7 is much newer and MORE COMPLEX so writing code to bypass the kernel and access hardware directly is much more likely to yield unpredictable results.

Until your Video editing software is updated you'll just have to live with this -- just change the resolution etc back again after you've finished your Video editing session or look for alternative "Windows Compliant" software.

A bit of a pain I know but that's about all you can do -- unless you can get a fix from the Software developer.

You have 32-bit Windows 7 - although you have 4GB ram onboard, only about 3.25GB is being addressed due to limitations of the 32-bit OS.

You need to run 64-Bit Windows to address all your RAM, and you cannot upgrade that beyond 4GB on your motherboard, in order not to run into memory problems doing what you do.

It seems your requirements exceed your hardware. Sorry.

Whats quizing me is this problem only started a couple of weeks ago prior to this all video editing software was'nt crashing and windows aero was'nt changing to window basic.
I have recently upgraded my cpu from a socket 939 dual core 3800+ to a dual core fx 60 which i heard is about the best you can get, i thought i was speeding up my pc not slowing it down.Could this be the cause?I had no problems installing it.

Different hardware -- different issues -- Windows might have different code threads for single, duo and quad multi-processors --and even the differences between the same makes of processor as well as different ones such as INTEL and AMD might also effct how the software works.

This isn't a speed issue per se but a compatability issue between your Hardware and the Video editing software.


You could try to totally UNINSTALL the video software and then re-install as it might be able to detect the newer hardware better.

Of course, it could be a SP1 effect - I found about a 20% increase in memory use on one machine after installing SP1.

I just tried Jimbo45's angle and uninstalled and reinstalled all my video editing software,but it did'nt fix anything.
You say it could be the sp1 update causing the memory drain,but is there a way of taking it off?

Well big problem trying to uninstall sp1,just keep getting failure after windows starts configuring during reboot.
I tried option 1 and 2. When i originally tried to install sp1 via windows update i had a failure,i tried twice.
Then i installed it manualy from the microsoft site successfully,i don't know if this the reason why i can't uninstall it.

Can't really go any further along that tack, can we?

Is there anything you can do in terms of removing services that run at startup, and uncoupling some of the USB devices that you have, for instance.

The fewer processes running, the less chance of slowdowns and competition for resources.

Some vendors' device drivers and device management software is unnecessary - the plain MS generic drivers work just as well (in some cases better, and leaner).

Device manager can show you how many unused drivers are available if you select show hidden devices, and of course if any devices have problems.

Common thread seems to be ATI video and 1920x1080 displays.

I have this problem with 16 gigs of ram, when using streaming software. I would think 16 gigs would be plenty.
