Ive been searching the net and this forum, and as far as i can tell, if your winsxs folder gets really big in Windows 7 your stuffed. There is no way to clean or reduce the size of it? Can anyone confirm this? or provide a solution to help me reduce the size of it, thanks

Thanks for the answer. One thing is i ran out of disk space at one point and couldn't fit anything else on it. I'm amusing this means there was space but due to explorer reading it wrong it stopped me?

No, incorrect.

Explorer displays it wrong when you right click on the folder and look at the properties to see how much space it is consuming. It's not so much that it's wrong..but rather it's giving you a sum total of all of the hard links to the actual files...when those files do not actually reside in that folder...but rather spread around the C:\windows directory. That is why deleting that folder would do no good...as the files "really are not there".

Explorer displays it right when you look at My Computer to see how much space is physically free on your hard drive. If you ran out of space, that means you ran out of space with files in all of the other folders on your hard drive.

The problem lies when people see their C drive getting smaller and then run tools which detail all of the folders and which ones are taking space. They see C:\windows\winsxs and freak out because it seems so large. But in reality, it's nothing more than hard links to the rest of the C:\windows directory. But when these tools add it up....it's the same as the first instance above where explorer is displaying it wrong when you check the properties of the folder.
