i wonder why people still buy winzip, when they can zip/unzip for free within windows?

fair enough, back in 9x/me days, it was a must-have utility...but that was then, and this is now...

same reasons i suppose that people buy winrar, when they can use the free 7-zip - brand loyalty or inertia?

Well, I've been a registered owner of Winzip since version 9, and they gave me a good price on upgrading to version 14 ($19.99) with a free upgrade to version 15 when it was released. The license also allows you to use it with one additional computer (my laptop) at no charge.

So the way I see it, there are some pieces of software I will still pay for (and Winzip handles many different archive formats, including .rar, etc).
