Hello, I installed Windows 7 recently and I have only been able to get on the Internet for random amounts of time due to my wireless connection dropping.

System Specs:
HP A6720f
Motherboard:M2N78-LA
RAM: 6 GB
HDD: 600 GB
Router: DLINK 655 N Router (set to mixed n and mixed g mode)
Wireless Adapter: Ralink USB Wireless Adapter b/g

Any help would be nice.

Change to another channel on the router. If there are others close by using the same channel as you this problem can occur.

I tried that and that did not help. It keeps saying my Gateway is unreachable... but my laptop with windows xp pro still is on the internet, my bro's pc (Win Vista) is still on the network. I like windows seven and all but this is getting ridiculous. I can't even get new updates without the wireless dropping and half the updates are not finished downloading.

I have had the same problem as you. I have noticed that my wireless connection works fine when my laptop is plugged into the mains. If I unplug it to run just on the battery the wireless connection comes and goes and we get the problem again.

I am confused!

How could this be possible???

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks.

hi i'm getting exactly the same thing.

tried it with two routers (both netgears though) a WPN824 and a WNR2000.

it will work fine for between 20 seconds and a couple of hours.

i can norally get it to drop the connection, by starting off a big download and making the connection. it will drop to "limited or no connectivity" with the yellow ! in the wireless signal in the taskbar.

from this point i am unable to connect to my access point or if i drop the connection and try to get ti back it just doesn;t connect any more.

this is using a hp tx2000 also with a broadcom wireless adapter.
a "broadcom 4321AG 802.11a/b/g/draft-n WIFI adapter"
according to device manager

maybe take a look around at your power settings which might be switching the wireless adapter off ?

It could also just be bad drivers as I personally reckon the manufacturers have yet to catch up with writing decent drivers for their hardware running on windows 7

Thanks.

Go to Device Manager to the Network Adapters area, and then right click on your wireless adapter. It should be under power settings tab.

There was a big thread awhile ago with a bunch of people having the same problem. A number of threads in fact. I don't think any resolution came out of any of them. I actually have the same issue and have yet to find a fix. Interestingly enough, I also have a Ralink adapter, so maybe that has something to do with things. Either way, every supposed fix under the sun hasn't worked for this. Disable HomeGroup, disable IPv6, edit broadcast settings in the registry, change power-off device settings, none of it has worked with any consistency.

In wondering whether it's the adapter itself, I'm just gonna go buy another adapter entirely and see if it fixes up the problem at all. I'll let everyone know how that goes.

I am having the same problem. Changing the power settings does nothing. I installed the latest drivers from the HP site. My tech guys are going to take a look at it for me and when they figure out what it was I will post it. It seems to me that after looking for several days for hte problems with my brand new system, that whatever the problem is whether it is drivers or updates or whatever it is affecting all of us the same. Once we figure out what the problem is there should be a way to fix it.

Yeah, nevermind this point, just tried this with another adapter I've got (USB) and it still happened. But it appears that this problem also coincides with my machine connecting strangely with all my USB devices. I've got a number of USB external harddrives plugged in and whenever the wireless connection drops, those devices become unresponsive (They still appear in the list of devices as if they are connected and any data that was in use when the disconnect happened is still accessible, but the rest of the data is not). Anybody else experience similar?

Good catch. I know previously that someone told you to check the power management tab for your network device. You also need to check for all of your USB serial devices. If the root hub is being turned off to save power then this could be a definite issue since your network device is usb

Hmm... i just checked the Device Manager for my four USB Root Hubs and I unchecked all of the boxes "Allow PC to turn off this device"... Now I shall go and test to see fi this works.

you could eliminate the USB interference by installing a wireless PCI card maybe :p

And this is what mine looks like:
Rosewill RNX-G300EX IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Wireless Card Up to 54Mbps Data Rates with 100cm cable external 2 dBi Antenna

Not a usb adapter either ;)

EDIT:

After snipping the hardware device ID from the device manager onto google... i found out i have a Sparklan 802.11bg USB adapter.. which is using the Ralink drivers... I'm gonna try to use the sparklan drivers.. even though they havent been updated in forever.
