Do you want to connect the XP PC wirelessly or with an Ethernet cable? If wireless, is it a laptop or desktop PC. If desktop, what kinbd of wireless device do you use?

Would help to have the make and model numbr of the XP PC too.

Wireless Connection

First, how are you using your laptop wirelessly? Is it from a direct connection(PC to router) or are you going through a modem? You can connect your modem directly to the router via the Ethernet or Internet port and then connect your pc(from it's Ethernet port) into one of the numbered(network) ports on the back of your router.

If you've been using you laptop with your router anyway, all of the devices should discover each other.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

You'll need to connect computer(2) from it's ethernet port to one of the numbered ports on the back of your router as this is your first wired network connection. Then connect your modem to the belkin router ethernet or internet port as that will route the data packets via the modem.

This setup should allow your dell to connect to the internet and your wireless adapter in your laptop will broadcast to allow wireless access.

Hope this helps.

If computer(2) is a desktop then, as far as i know, you can't unless you install a wireless card into it(which i've never heard of). If it is a desktop then originally desktops were designed to network via ethernet. That's what connects you to the cyberspace of the internet.

As i said; as far as i know.

Thanks for the info. but that brings me to a question, why would you want to install a wireless card in a desktop? Given the limited mobility of a desktop and the range constraint of the router signal?

Sometimes the router is to far or someone doesn't want to run 200+ feet of ethernet cable to reach the desktop. Just because a desktop is going to be stationary doesn't make wireless on a desktop out of the question in certain circumstances. For example currently in my mom's house there are 4 wireless desktops just because of the size of the house and me being to lazy to run cable.

As to the original question, xp can not be connected wirelessly as Is, but needs card or adaptor to connect to my belkin router??

Yes, this goes for most desktop computers and any operating system.

Alternatively we can over complicate the situation and you can create a wireless bridge with 2 access points and an unmanaged switch. You would connect access point A to your router and access point B to an unmanaged switch. This method really is just over kill and rarely used in a home environment(getting a wireless car is so much better).

Why wireless though? It's about 1/2 the speed of a wired Ethernet connection (you have a Belkin Wireless G). Is the router located too far from the desktop to run an Ethernet cable?

What is the make and model number of the desktop? I'm sure it already has an Ethernet port so all you would need is an Ethernet cable.

right-on ZTRUCKER. the dell optiplex desktop was my only computer. since have moved & space was very limited for the desktop, so went to laptop. maybe i can realize some good from the dell by using It from garage, back porch, etc. where hard wireing would be difficult.
