Wireless DI-524 D-link router

Hello Dear friends...

How are you?

I have experienced certain problems with that router, DI-524 150MB D-link router... It works just fine with windows seven except for the fact that it requires me to switch it off at every 6 or 10 hours (as suggested by win 7's troubleshooter)

Unplug your router for 10 seconds and bla bla bla...

It works after that, the problem it that I have to do it again and again, over and over!

Could you help me to find out what is going on?

Thats an old one isn't it, I don't see it listed on the D-Link forums? Do you have the latest firmware? Do you have any cordless phones in the same 2.4 GHz band? I did and they messed up my DIR-615. Double check your settings, I might even reset it to defaults and set it all up again. A common suggestion on the D-Link forums for problems like that is to disable "DNS Relay" and "Advanced DNS". You'll have to reboot your PC(s) if you disable DNS relay.

Yes, I guess it is the latest, version 4.x from Sep 2009. Sometimes it just won't let access its main page, like right now. I don't know why!

Do you have any cordless phones in the same 2.4 GHz band? I did and they messed up my DIR-615.

You may have got it a week ago, but it is an older model that first came out around 5 years ago. It has also been discontinued (EOL) by D-Link back in early 2008,

Is this a new router or is a used one? In either case it sounds like it could be defective if it is requiring a restart every few hours just to maintain a connection. Personally I would look at returning it and replacing it with a router that is still receiving support, and if you are using the wireless capability of it one that supports the latest security (the DI-524 only supports up to WPA).

Yes, I already saw that page, it says this model has been discontinued in the United States, but I live in Brazil, where they're selling tons of it.


firmware: I guess it is the latest, version 4.01 from July 2009

Hello there.

I am back. I have noticed that althrough internet does not work, I still can have access to the router (sometimes and after a few minutes), then... if I change the SSID, internet works!!!

Does anyone have any idea of what this is about?

Turning off DNS relay in the router will cause you to loose your INTERNET until you reboot the PC. You can still log into the router without a reboot by typing in its IP address, this bypasses DNS. Are you using static or dynamic IP's on your PCs? If you are using static IPs you will have to change the DNS server info to match your ISP's DNS server IP's.

Nope, DNS relay is ON and I am using dynamic IP's.

Update: At every 6 or 10 hours internet stops working, but as I still have access to the router, I change my SSID and I get my internet back working fine. However... sometimes, I can't have access to the router, then I just power it off for 10 seconds and problem solved for another 6 or 10 hours.

I also noticed that it may happen to cut out in the middle of a download... cutting to the chase, it finishes the download but won't let me surf the web.

Changing the SSID is likely making the router reboot or restart when you click save settings. It's just doing the same thing as power cycling it. If it was mine I think I would take it back for a refund and buy something a little more up to date.
