Wireless laptop connectivity

Cant really find a great way to describe my problem by topic alone.. but i have some weird problems with my 2 laptops running windows 7 x86.

Now.. My setup is basically like this:

Wireless router connected to my adsl modem from one of the LAN ports on the router (Basically working as a AP only.. No nat/firewall++)

I have 3 desktop computers connected to the lan ports on my adsl modem.

All computers get DHCP adresses from the ADSL modem, and are all set up to the same workgroup. I have tried the "homegroup" thingy, but that is only working until next reboot (as the laptop will be unavailable from the desktop computers).

All 3 desktop computers can connect/share files between them. I can ping all 3 desktop computers from eachother. I can ping all 3 desktop computers from my laptops. All 5 computers can connect to the internet without problems.

However, i can not connect from any of the desktop computers TO the laptops. Ive set up filesharing on the laptops, and i cannot connect directly from a desktop computer (wired) to the laptop (wireless). Now.. this would be easy if it was ONLY that.. but here is the twist :

I can access/ping/whatever TO the wireless computer if i FIRST connect FROM the wireless TO the desktop!

Meaning.. To access a share on the laptop, i first have to connect FROM the laptop to a share on my desktop.. and THEN i can access the laptop from my desktop just fine.

The same goes for normal ping.. Ie. if i ping the laptop FROM the desktop, i get request timeout. If i ping the desktop FROM the laptop first, and THEN ping the laptop FROM the desktop, it works fine.

I have ofc disabled firewall, i have NOD32 antivirus installed witch have no known firewall or filtering. (I also have tried disabling this).

Now.. this could be a basic wireless configuration setting on the AP itself, but if i boot the wireless laptop on eg. a ubuntu livecd, i can ping both ways with no restrictions at all!

Any ideas? Both the laptops are of different manufacturer.. one is a 2 year old Compaq pressario v6502EO, and the other is a brand new Acer Aspire.

I have ofc tested without ipv6 enabled with absolutely no effect on my problem. (Default boot from the ubuntu livecd also enables ipv6 on my adapter, so i would not believe this to be the direct culprit).

192.168.0.1 is the adress of my ADSL router.

Comparing the desktop's LAN ipconfig and laptop's wireless LAN ipconfig, i can't see any reasons for all the machines to connect to to the other. If the other machine's ip details are consistent with these, then you got a perfect network. All able to surf the net compliments this.

As for,
However, i can not connect from any of the desktop computers TO the laptops

Seems to be a share permission or credentials issue. How do you do your connection to the shares and what credentials are u using?

If it was "only" this, i would agree with you, but afaik there should be no credentials needed to do a normal ping.

And as i describe above, if i connect FROM "lap" TO "Game", it works with no problem, and i can connect FROM "Game" to "Lap". However, if i try to do it the other way around, i only get an error with the computer not found.

Code:
Pinging lap.workgroup [192.168.0.13] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.0.30: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 192.168.0.30: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 192.168.0.30: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 192.168.0.30: Destination host unreachable.

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.13:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Is what i get when i try to ping the laptop from the desktop.

After doing a ping Game from the laptop, this is the result:
Code:
Pinging lap.workgroup [192.168.0.13] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.0.13: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.13: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.13: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.13: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.13:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 2ms, Average = 1ms
This last for.. well.. about 2-5 minutes if i do not continue any traffic between the two computers. Then its just like the wireless disappears. (Surfing/whatever works fine all the time, its the connection between the two computers that stops).

I am not able to ping the other laptop from "Lap" at all.. nor the other way around (since they are both on the wirless ap).

Fun times eh? :P

Now.. a small update of kinds..

I just ran the BT4 (BackTrack 4) livecd on my laptop, and i use wicd to connect the wireless adapter to my AP. Everything connects, and i can surf the net ++.. However, the problem is identical there as it was in windows 7!

This was not the case using the slightly older Ubuntu livecd..

I am.. totally at a loss other than ofc it might be the wireless ap fubaring something.. but why would the same thing work with identical hardware in a older Ubuntu livecd?

I am going to run a linux rev. in a VMware session using a USB wifi adapter and see if that can stay connected on the same AP.

Any more ideas around this?

So far i havent been able to figure out vmware settings for usb wireless adapter and whatnot.. So no go for me there..

Anyone? :)

Sounds like more A/V wierdness to me. Once you toss an A/V software into the mix all bets are off. The fact that you had problems with Homegroups also points to an A/V problem. Uninstall your A/V and try again. If all the machines are Win7 I would definately go with Homegroups as it works absolutely perfectly for me. :)

Anti Virus. You should always get your network up and running with sharing tested before you install any type of Anti Virus.

My "testmachine" is always a totally fresh installed machine with no antivirus or firewall or anything installed.. But that made no difference.

However i have now solved the problem altogether.. by buying a brand new wireless router (Linksys WRT320N). Everything is atleast seemingly working.. Homegroup online, ping works, sharing works.. No software change on any of the computers..

Not really sure what was causing the other wireless AP to make windows 7 wireless clients appear offline tho..

There have been so many hardware problems with older routers I'm not too surprized. I'll mark as solved then. Glad you have it working again. ;)
