Wireless network connection but no internet

I need help please. I setup a brand new Dell 1464 laptop up at home last week. It is running Windows 7 home premium out of the box. Had no issues. Got it to connect to the network both wireless and Ethernet. When I right clicked on the network icon on the taskbar, there was my router (Linksys) with a strong connection.
When the laptop was taken to another site for work purposes, could not see the corporate wireless network, so their IT people worked on it a while. They still couldn't get it to connect, so it was setup with the Ethernet. ( I don't know what they did, BTW) The problem is now at home, when I try to connect wirelessly, I can connect with the network and see and access the other computers on the network, but I have no internet connection. When I right click on the network icon on the taskbar, I now have two Linksys icons, one shows great connection, another one has a yellow exclamation mark on it. I've tried the troubleshoot on it and it doesn't find anything wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried connecting to the stronger of the two manually?

Do you have a backup to restore from?

Have you rebooted the router and PC at the same time?

I don't have a restore point back far enough from the change made by the IT people, and yes I have rebooted both the router and the PC at the same time. I'm not sure what you mean by connecting to the stronger of the two. It appears connected now and shows a strong signal. I'm assuming that since both linksys icons are showing up, I'm connected by both, but I may be wrong.

Well I found out what was causing the problems. It turns out the last program I installed caused the problem. It was Shrew Soft VPN client for 64 bit windows. Once I uninstalled the program, I have both network and Internet access. Glad it was a simple solution. Does this mean you can't have a VPN client installed in order to use wireless Internet? Thanks.

It could just be a configuration issue.

I don't know your VPN software, but if it has a way to turn it off or on, like the built in Windows VPN connectivity, then turn it off except for when you need to access the resources that you need the VPN to access.

What alerted me to this VPN issue was a response on a Microsoft site. The person said that the DNS stopped working for wireless connections all of a sudden. It turned out that he had inadvertently turned on Packet Filtering somehow. A technician at his work turned it off and now he can connect to the internet via wireless. He says that the packet filtering software was probably installed when he installed his Shrewsoft VPN client software.
My question is where or how do I find the Packet Filtering and how would I turn it off so that I can use this VPN client with wireless. Thanks.
