I have a toshiba satellite L655-S5117 laptop . My Wireless network speed is fluctuating from 130 Mbps to 11 Mbps . In my hostel most of my friends are getting 130 Mbps . Due to the fluctuation I am getting slower browsing speed . And sometimes its getting disconnected also . Is that because of the drivers? Any help .. please its urgent !

Hi daredevils.

Usually, a fluctuating wireless speed is down to 2 things. Signal strength or contention. We'll start with signal strength.

Basically, the weaker the signal the slower it goes. However, just because Windows is reporting 130Mb/s does NOT mean your internet is going at 130Mb/s. Generally the external speed (internet to the router) is much slower than the internal (router to you). Your internet will only be as fast as the slowest point. I would suggest that you try going to Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and running speed tests when it is reporting 130 and when it is reporting 11. If there is no difference (and I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't) then you dont need to worry.

If your problem is signal strength, then all I can suggest is that you try and move closer to the router. (I am assuming the router is in a central location)

The other issue may be contention. I am not entirely sure whether Windows will report a different speed if the connection is contended, but it may do. Basically, on a wireless network, that 130Mb/s is NOT exclusively for you. It is shared between all connections running wirelessly. Again though, this doesn't really matter as the external speed is probably much slower than the internal speed, and the external is also being shared between you all. Here is an article I wrote a while back on contention: http://www.sevenforums.com/network-...tion-what-how-works-why-my-internet-slow.html

The fact that you are getting disconnects suggests to me its probably signal strength to be honest though.

Now the problem is not with the speed . Too often I will be disconnected from the internet (that means the network shows no internet access) . In order to connect to the internet again, I have to disconnect and reconnect to the network . This is so much irritating .. any help ? I will be pleased to know ..

You could try using an ext antenae to boost your signal strength..if thats possible for you..I have no idea what your using to connect so it's a suggestion only.
