Wireless networks not detected

A clean installation of Win 7 Prof 64bit is not able to detect any of the dozen or so wireless networks in our neighborhood. Also, the expected wireless icon in the lower right of the screen does not display.

Assuming no hardware issue (laptop has wireless switch enabled) and that another computer in the same room can see these wireless networks, why can't this setup see any networks? The network utility in Control Panel don't appear to offer any option and I am exhausted from my solution search efforts.

My Slimline is the one that can see the wireless networks and it is a Win 7 Pro upgrade. The problem is with Win7 Prof on my Apple Bootcamp MacBookPro. Also, the Mac side of my Bootcamp can see the same set of wireless networks.

I have a post in the Apple forum, and didn't want to mention that fact here. The reason I posted here is because a number of forum entries suggest that Win 7 sometimes leaves wireless disabled by default and doesn't provide a menu driven way to change it. People are frustrated trying to enable it, so I assume the issue properly belongs in the Windows area.

Does Windows provide a suitable generic driver for wireless? If it has to link to an Apple driver then perhaps it simply disables the function rather that upsetting the installation process as it has no obligation to an Apple installation. This is just my current working theory.
